Warframe

F2P co-op shooter Warframe appears to be doing fairly well for itself, with the company behind it, Digital Extremes, announcing that they’ve now passed the one million registered players mark.

Digital Extremes attributes the growth to “development transparency and regular interaction with its community”, which is certainly a fine methodology to aspire to.

Warframe has been a different experience each time I’ve jumped back into the beta, so they’re certainly not shy about making changes. If you’re interested in joining the open beta you can do so for yourself at warframe.com (it’s free, yo).

Want to see it what it looks like in action? Here’s a delightful PhysX video.

Warframe

If you enjoy a bit of Mass Effect 3-style multiplayer, then perhaps the multiplayer delights of Warframe will be right up your alley.

Developers Digital Extremes have posted an announcement to explain that from 4:00 AM AEDT tomorrow morning, the client will be available to download from their site. The beta will run until 1:00 AM AEDT on Wednesday morning. Anybody who plays during this time will have the chance to buy an exclusive in-game market weapon only available during the beta weekend.

I’ve managed to fit a few closed beta games in, and it’s still a bit rough around edges but shows some promise — although quite frankly the microtransactions element seems all sorts of grindy. Hit up the official site for more info on how to sign up.

The latest dev diary from the creators of Warframe shows off some new Warframes and some of their sweet ninja abilities. Today’s stars are Excalibur, a starting warframe, and the Rhino, a big beefy tank warframe. The closed beta has begun, so those of us not lucky enough to make it in can watch and wait for our turn at the helm of these rock ‘em sock ‘em robots. Check out the dev diary below.

If you’re at all interested in the idea of jumping into a ninja-like mech suit and slicing through enemies, then you’re probably a person of good taste and have already learned everything there is to know about Warframe. Ah, but not everything — today’s dev diary shows off the Loki and the Mag mechs, whose various powers include the ability to not only drop a decoy but then teleport-swap places with it, as well as putting a shield around enemies that reflects their own bullets back into them. Delightful!

You can get more info on Warframe and sign up for the beta at their site.

Digital Extremes, makers of The Darkness 2, are in the alpha stage with their new free-to-play, multiplayer shooter, Warframe. To me the game looks very Mass Effect 3-multiplayer-esque, which makes me pretty excited, as I am a big fan. The game will feature procedurally generated PvE maps, character customisation and, as Brenna says over here, awesome ninja powers. Check out the alpha trailer below, and sign up for the beta that starts in Australia’s summer.
