And a bunch of other things as well. In fact Kingmaker not only has all the DLC released to date, but also adds a new ‘Assault’ mode to the game. Perhaps more importantly, it also adds Brian Blessed in the character of Richard Neville as the announcer! Bloody marvellous.

If you haven’t already got War of the Roses, then the Kingmaker edition is designed to entice you in — but if you do, then you’ll get all this stuff for free in an upcoming patch anyway. Lovely work!

War of the Roses

If you’ve been wanting to try War of the Roses but haven’t got the dough to shell out for it, never fear! Paradox have just announced that their promised free trial is now underway, and can be downloaded here on Steam.

The trial allows users to play with all other users, even paid users, so there’s nothing to stop you from playing it like everybody else — but there are some limitations on classes and weapons. Only the four base classes (Footman, Guardsman, Longbowman, and Footknight) and default weapons and armour are allowed to trial users.

All maps are playable, but only two game modes (Team Deathmatch and Conquest) are open to trial users. You can accrue in-game currency, but you won’t be able to spend it (unless you buy the full version).

Gallowglass Mercenaries

Paradox have released a big ol’ patch for War of the Roses, bringing with it a slew of balance changes and the Gallowglass Mercenary Pack. “Covered in mail and ready to cut down Englishmen for cold hard coin, the Scottish Gallowglass mercenaries brought brute force and fighting spirit to the battlefields like none could,” announce Paradox with some glee.

The free update contains Gallowglass Mail Armour, a new Gallowglass Mail Helmet, and three new Gallowglass weapons: Long Axe, Halflang Sword, and Battle Axe.

The patch also contains a complete revamp of the way Armour works in game, as well as an improved overall movement speed, changes to Perks and to the way the chat system works.

A free update coming to War of the Roses tomorrow (December 19) will bring two brand-new maps, based on the Battle of Wakefield and the Battle of Towton.

The update promises a pile of new weapons and armour and, as VG247 points out, the Dagger and Sword of Mary will be be available in the game’s store from December 21 onwards. Take a look at the video for the Battle of Wakefield below.

War of the Roses

If you’re loving War of the Roses but struggling with the level of variety in the game, Fatshark have got you covered. Several new game modes are on their way next month, including ‘Pitched Battle, which will give each player only one life and no respawns, and an as-yet unrevealed ‘attack mode’ which presumably splits the team into offensive and defensive objective-based gameplay.

New weapons are also incoming: a halberd, a gothic mace, a horn-spanned crossbow, an additional arming sword, an Italian side sword, a rondel dagger and a pollaxe. A new set of heavy armour from the Knights Hospitaller and a new helmet are also coming in. Two additional winter wonderland battlefields based on the Battle of Wakefield, in December 1460, and the Battle of Towton, in March 1461, are also coming in.

“We’re also testing a sniffing tracker on servers to help identify those using speed hacks that are more common,” said Fatshark’s senior producer Gordon Van Dyke. “We’ve actually had our QA team use some hacks in testing to help us combat them.”

Medieval multiplayer combat sim War of the Roses is just days away from launch, and Paradox Interactive has something pretty special planned. The publisher has invited fans to tune into from 5:00PM GMT October 2 (alas! That’s around 1:00AM AEST) to a livestream hosted by senior producer Gordon Van Dyke. You’ll be able to ask questions about the game, and play with Van Dyke and Internet favourites Tejbz, Maven and 2GD once the launch ticks over.

The whole shebang will be broadcast on Paradox Interactive’s TwitchTV channel should you be suffering some decent post-long weekend insomnia.

In this new developer diary for War of the Roses, two members of the Fatshark team visit Warwick Castle and the Royal Armouries in Leeds in pursuit of authenticity. Medieval geeks will find much of interest in the historical artefacts on show, and there’s plenty to learn for the rest of us. Did you know that most soldiers didn’t even have helmets, let alone mail or armour? The multiplayer combat sim is due to launch on October 2; there’s some decent gameplay footage through the video, too.

The PC elite at Paradox have cracked open the floodgates on Fatshark’s upcoming historical action effort, War of the Roses, by finally allowing beta sign ups. Although it comes equipped with a single-player campaign, Fatshark has freely admitted that War of the Roses is all about team multiplayer, so you should use this time wisely to clamber up the learning curve ahead of the plebs. Visit the game’s website to put your name on the dotted line ahead of its third-quarter release.
