The Witcher 2 REDKit

Following their accidental early release last week, CDProjekt RED have now officially released REDKit, the modding tools for The Witcher 2.

The tools are available via dedicated REDKit site, which also features a detailed wiki as well as an already-completed mod named Lykaon.

You’ll need a PC copy of The Witcher 2 to run REDKit, which you should of course have already as it’s one of the finest RPGs around. Go on, get on that.

While playing around with its website last week, Witcher developer CD Projekt RED accidentally opened access to downloads of its much anticipated mod tool suite, REDkit. It quickly corrected the error, but not before some lucky sods got their hands on the files.

“Those of you who have downloaded the REDkit files – have fun – they are official so don’t worry!” a community manager advised forum goers.

Although the tools seem to be in complete form, CD Projekt just isn’t ready to unleash them yet.

“Please give us just a little bit more time (it’s almost here!). We apologize for the confusion,” the representative added.

Geralt Loves his iPod

Mac owners, rejoice: you can now continue to play a small selection of games! Okay, that was mean, I’m sorry. But that selection of games has grown today, with the addition of not only GOG.com’s premiere Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, but also games like Ultima, Syndicate, Wing Commander, Sim City, Crusader, Little Big Adventure, Theme Hospital and Anomaly: Warzone Earth.

This new section on GOG.com helpfully catalogues all the available Mac OS X games for you, with more promised in the future. In the meantime, GOG are celebrating their new cross-platformity with a 25% off sale on The Witcher 2, making it just $30 for a DRM-free copy that works on both PC and Mac, forever. Good times! There’s a bunch more sales on as well including Theme Hospital for only $2.99, so be sure to check out the catalogue linked above.

The REDKit modding toolset is coming to a computer near you in the first half of 2013, allowing you to rip apart the REDEngine — the fantastic-looking engine which powers The Witcher 2 — and make your own nonsense with it. The tools are currently in closed beta phase, and are being distributed to over 100 community modding teams to assist with the “perfection of the tools and the game engine itself”. They will be a free update to all Witcher 2 owners come launch next year. Check out the video below to see them in action.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings developer CD Projekt RED has announced a set of mod tools for the popular action RPG. Called REDkit, the much-requested suite will enable players to create content ranging from suitably non-linear quests all the way up to whole new environments. CD Projekt RED’s proprietary engine is a fancy piece of work indeed, so it’ll be exciting to see what our homebrew brethren can concoct with it. Unfortunately there’s no release date attached to the toolkit; it will be shown to press behind closed doors during gamescom, which runs August 15 through 19 in Cologne, Germany.

The Witcher 2

According to CD Projekt Red, The Witcher and its sequel The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings have sold over 4 million copies – so far. The Witcher 2 will be released on Mac later in the year, and for the XBox 360 in Japan in August, so that number is liable to grow further. “I’m still amazed with the result we have achieved with The Witcher franchise,” Adam Badowski, head of CD Projekt Red, has commented. “Many gamers on many platforms have been drawn to the vivid and complex world we have created. In the gaming world summer means a lot of great, hot deals. So if you still don’t own the game look out for both retail and digital special offers. The Witcher and The Witcher 2 are great, robust RPGs, that every true gamer should own.” Amen to that.
