Razer Edge

Razer have used this year’s CES to reveal that their ‘Project Fiona’ tablet, which they asked 10,000 people to ‘Like’ on Facebook, is set to move into production and will now be re-branded as the ‘Razer Edge’.

The tech specs for the device have also been revealed. It will come in two versions, a standard (starting at $999) and a Pro (not priced). The standard model comes with an Intel® Core™ i5 processor, NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 64 GB SSD. Meanwhile, the Pro version comes replete with an upgraded Intel® Core™ i7 processor, NVIDIA GT640M LE GPU, 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 128 GB or 256 GB SSD.

The Pro will be offered as part of a bundle which includes a Gamepad Controller (which you can see in the picture), turning the Edge into a “mobile console”. The controller is priced at $249. Other accessories include an optional Keyboard Dock (coming in Q3, not priced) an Extended Battery ($69, doubles battery life) and a Docking Station which “serves as a full desktop and charging resource with three USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, mic-in and stereo-out”. That’ll set you back another $99.

Both models are expected to be available in Q1 of this year.

Razer Project: Fiona

Razer’s ‘Project Fiona‘ has always been a strange one: a gaming tablet powered by some of the best mobile hardware possible, and built into a system that incorporates a controller split onto either side of the main screen. Organised over Facebook, the company asked its fans last Wednesday for 10,000 Likes in order to start working on it, and the fans delivered.

Now, Razer are set to move ahead with the project. “We’ve been working on it since (the reveal) and have narrowed down a couple of key concepts/designs. We would like to reach out to the community to see the level of interest before we actually launch it,” reads the Facebook post. “We’d like to hear how you would like to design the actual tablet right here on the Razer Facebook Page, as well as take suggestions for specs, form factor, pricing, features etc.”

Razer has previously tested consumer interest in a similar fashion on a left-handed Naga mouse, which was received very positively. The company then went on to make the product and now, according to Polygon, sells them — even though it’s at a loss. Good stuff.
