Monaco‘s Andy Schatz has revealed that ‘Thief vs. Thief’ and ‘Cops and Robbers’ modes were originally slated to be in the game, but ended up being cut.

Thief vs. Thief mode was a highly competitive mode that pit the players against each other in a race to collect the most coins, get the trophy and escape. “But we found that the thief that got out in front early just sucked up all the coins, which reinforced his advantage,” said Schatz.

“So we introduced colored coins: coins that could only be picked up by you. But in the end we felt like there really wasn’t enough interaction between players for it to feel fun.”

Meanwhile, Cops and Robbers mode — which is pretty self-explanatory — apparently suffered from balancing issues. “In the early levels it was too easy for the thieves to win and in the later levels, it was almost impossible for the players to win,” said Schatz. “When it worked, though, it was incredibly fun! I’m still hoping to add this mode at some point.”

Monaco: What’s Yours Is Mine has a lot to live up to. Revealed in 2010 by creator Andy Schatz, this indie stealth adventure managed to beat out Super Meat Boy and Fez at the IGF Awards that year, and has been winning the hearts of festival attendees ever since. We’ve been waiting for Monaco for what seems like an eternity, and one has to ask themselves, was it worth the wait?

Yes. Absolutely, yes.

Monaco is a two-to-four player co-op heist game and, as you’ll be able to see from the trailer below, is a top-down, quirky affair with heaps of bright colours and chaotic action. It’s been in development for nearly four years now and already won a bunch of indie awards, and finally — finally! — has a release date set for April 24. We recently went hands-on with an early build and called it “one of the best multiplayer experiences in a long time“. Check it out.

If you’re not excited about four-player co-cop heist simulator Monaco then it’s time to get excited, because the developers have just announced a Steam release date of April 24.

Although the price hasn’t shown up on Steam yet, the developer has confirmed via Twitter that it will be priced at $14.99.

Check out our preview of the game right here. Monaco is also coming to XBLA on the same date for 1200 MS Points.

One of the indie titles I’m most looking forward to is Monaco, a top-down four-player heist game where four players try to break into and then make it out of a casino while backstabbing each other, avoiding guards, and generally having a great time. Now, it’s available for pre-order over at the official site.

Pre-orders can grab the game for $13.50 instead of the $15 it will be when it launches, or grab a four-pack for $45.

Those who pre-order will get a Steam key for the game, a DRM-free copy of the 2010 IGF-winning prototype (renamed MONTE-CARLO), two tracks from the OST (by Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory, who also scored Journey), as well as sheet music.

Highly-anticipated (at least here, in my office) indie gem Monaco has finally announced that pre-orders will soon become available.

Speaking on the game’s official Twitter feed, developer Andy Schatz revealed that pre-orders will use the Humble store, will deliver Steam keys, and be available in packs of 4. Schatz also revealed the existence of “MAJOR preorder bonus goodies”.

As for a final release date, the four-player co-op stealth heist game is headed for “Marchish”. What is Monaco, you ask, and why should I care? Take a look at this video.
