Battlefield 3: Aftermath

An easter egg has been discovered in Battlefield 3: Aftermath that appears to be a reference to Mirror’s Edge. Is it another hint that a sequel is coming our way, or just a reference to a game past? Atop a building on the Markaz Monolith  map, facing the vasty nothingness, are Faith’s running shoes. They sort of stick out like a sore thumb in all that beige.

On top of that, if you walk over to them — you can hear young Faith breathing.

So take that as you will. Is this further proof that Mirror’s Edge 2 is “general knowledge”? Or is this an attempt to “gain credibility by association”? (I know that one was a bit of a stretch, quiet you.)

What do you think it means? And what would you prefer? Let us know in the comments.

Mirror's Edge

Yesterday’s reveal from a former DICE employee that it was “common knowledge” Mirror’s Edge 2 was in development may have been nothing more than an “attempt to gain credibility by association”.

Current DICE employee Stefan Boberg tweeted somewhat cryptically that we should “Never trust a man who badmouths and talks down all his ex-employers… but still attempts to gain credibility by association,” tagging it with “#nohire”. The tweet was picked up by and retweeted by a number of DICE bigwigs, including Battlefield 3 lead designer Gustav Halling and rendering architect Johan Andersson.

PCGamesN is reporting that the source of the original “common knowledge” remark, Ben Cousins, has been cautioned by EA in the past as they were worried he might disclose “trade secrets and confidential information”. Looks like they may have been right — but it also looks like maybe Mirror’s Edge 2 isn’t such a safe bet after all.

Mirror's Edge

When EA claimed that DICE “wasn’t just a Battlefield factory“, many of us immediately hoped that they meant that Mirror’s Edge 2 was in development. Well, it looks like it is.

Former Battlefield series executive producer Ben Cousins, who is fairly familiar with Stockholm’s gaming scene and with DICE, reacted to the news by claiming that “It is general knowledge in the Stockholm dev scene that Mirror’s Edge 2 is in production at DICE.”

In May this year, “Mirror’s Edge 2″ turned up on more than a few ex-DICE employee resumes, before being hastily deleted. While EA is yet to make an official announcement, all signs point to any announcement surely not being too far off.
