Impire

Impire is the latest attempt to capture the legacy of Dungeon Keeper, but it can’t quite match the charm of the original, and its attempts to innovate are unfortunately undercut by repetition and tedium. It’s not that it’s a bad game, but if Impire were a student it’d be the much younger brother of a star pupil, who disappoints onlookers by coasting through on barely-passing grades.

Of Orcs and Men and Game of Thrones: Genesis developer Cyanide Studios is still waiting for that one big hit to capture PC gamers’ hearts. Its latest effort, Impire, looks quite a lot like Bullfrog classic Dungeon Keeper, which is no bad thing. It’s set in the same world as Paradox’s Majesty franchise, and is going to have a single-player campaign, co-op, and some sort of four-player mode. Also, according to this trailer, “a soundtrack so dark and epic that viewers will be unable to stop themselves from joining Báal-Abaddon in the Bottomless Mosh Pit”. Okay. Impire is due sometime this quarter, and is just one of a number of new games in the works at Cyanide Studios.
