As you know here at games.on.net we run a buttload of servers for many and varied games, and now we’re proud to announce that we’ve just deployed our first lot of ArmA 3 servers.

These are still development servers as the game is only in alpha, so please be aware it might not be fully stable or properly featured yet.

So! Help us test them by connecting and playing on them today — you should see them in your server browser. You’ll need to make sure you’re running the DEV build of the ArmA 3 alpha — details on how to do that can be found here.

Last night, Funko mercilessly killed and resurrected the games.on.net free-for-all Minecraft server. No longer the ’3FL’ or ‘Wild West’ server, it’s now called the games.on.net PVP Minecraft server.

What’s it all about? Glad you asked! You can find all the rules governing the server by clicking here — there aren’t many, since the whole point of the server is to go nuts and murder and betray each other in creative ways. If you’re looking for a safe place to build and trade with people, try our regular, white-listed Minecraft server instead (details here).

Connect to the games.on.net Minecraft PVP server at minecraftpvp.games.on.net. We’re currently running CraftBukkit 1.5.2 and we’ve already noticed a few bugs, so please contact us or post in this thread if you notice anything weird.

Recently, we took the step of implementing advertisements on some of our game servers in order to help cover the costs of providing you with Australia’s best gaming network. The response we received from you, our player base, was very clear: you did not like them at all.

We understand. Nobody likes advertisements, and we didn’t take the decision to implement them lightly — our number one priority was that having ads on our servers did not impact the user experience. After reviewing feedback, it became clear to us that these advertisements did not function as intended and were hurting your experience on our servers.

Today, we’re announcing that these advertisements have been pulled from all of our servers. Most of them have already gone, and others will soon follow suit.

Why did we remove the ads?

To put it simply, the application we were using to deliver the ads to you (Pinion) was buggy and not performing as intended. This resulted in poor performance of some game clients and therefore a negative experience for you as a player. Additionally, the 30-second lockout on some servers was adversely impacting gameplay, especially on our beloved Counter-Strike servers.

Ultimately though, it’s important to us that we value what our playerbase wants — and your response on this has been very clear.

Why am I still seeing Message of the Day ads for iiNet/Internode stuff?

We are running and will continue to run MOTD ads for our in-house products as a way of recouping costs. These ads will expand over the next few months, but the advertisements as you knew them are gone.

Will ads ever come back?

Never say never. We will confirm that we currently have no plan to reintroduce them in their previous form. But the costs of running a massive server network are real, and if we can find a way to cover some of those costs with server ads in a way that doesn’t make you want to hurl your computer out of the window in rage, then we’ll do that.

Please note that from time to time, some test servers may pop up with ads on them as we test new ways of delivering these to you. These will be clearly labelled as advertising servers so there won’t be any unpleasant surprises.

Why do you even run ads at all?

Unfortunately, there’s no two ways about it: running this massive server network across Australia costs a lot of money, and it’s important to try and cover the cost of that as we continually expand. In an ideal world we’d love to have completely ad-free servers, but until then we’ll have to keep doing what we can to provide the service you know and love.

But I already pay you money through my ISP fees!

We are currently looking into the possibility of implementing a system that will not display ads to users who are playing on iiNet group connections. This needs a lot of further development work before we can begin testing it, and it is NOT A GUARANTEE that we will ever be able to make it happen. But we hear what you are saying, and we think it’s worth looking into — so we’ll be doing that. Stay tuned for further updates on that front!

In 2010, we kicked off the original Adopt-a-Server Program and gave our admins a server of their own to customise and kit out in any way they saw fit — and a huge number of new servers opened up, boasting all sorts of game modes and configs we just weren’t expecting.

Now, in 2013, we’re taking this a step further. The new Adopt-a-Server Program isn’t just for admins — it’s for you. That’s right, you, reading this, right now. We want to give you the chance to take one of our servers and make it your own.

Woah! How does this work?

First of all, this offer is only open to iiNet group customers — in other words, the fine people who pay for games.on.net to exist in the first place.

Assuming you’re one of those people, all you need to do to apply is head over to our Contact Page and select ‘Adopt-a-Server’ from the drop-down menu. Tell us which of the below games you’d like to adopt a server for, and make sure you supply your ISP email address and your games.on.net username when completing the form so we can verify you are an iiNet group customer.

Some things you need to know

There are a limited amount of servers available for each title, so we can’t accomodate every request. Also, we can’t devote hardware to something that’s not being used — so please be aware that we will be reviewing adopted servers every two months and making sure that they’re being used. If an adopted server is empty, we will take it away and re-allocate it to somebody else.

These servers can be left public or made private. You can brand or label them any way you wish. Please keep in mind that if you make your server private for just you and your mates however, and we come by in two months and see that nobody is using it, we’ll steal it back from you and give it to somebody else. If our hardware isn’t being used, your money isn’t doing its job.

Sometimes the servers will go down! There is no guarantee of uptime, though obviously we try our hardest to keep them operational. To report a problem with your server, visit the Contact Page and choose ‘Report a problem with a game server’ from the drop-down menu.

And another, final reminder that this offer is only available to iiNet group customers.

If you’re having a problem with one of our many glorious servers — maybe it’s down, or it needs an update to the latest patch — you can now have your concerns sent directly to our admin and maintenance team by using our Contact page.

Choose the ‘Report a problem with a game server’ option in the drop-down menu, fill in the details, and then hit send. Our team of game admins and system engineers will cast their robotic eyes over your message shortly (though if you report something in the middle of the night, please understand that we are still 98% human by volume, and thus need sleep).

This process is used for both 3FL and games.on.net servers, as all admins will see it. See you in game!

Lovers of classic multiplayer games, rejoice! Games.on.net have just announced that we are deploying a number of servers for some older classic games. These servers are here to stay and will never be shut down!

These public servers will run as is, with little to no customisation. So what games are to be catered for? Well, let’s look at the list. We’ve got the original Call of Duty, as well as Call of Duty 2, Unreal Tournament and Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake 3. What a list!

So next time you have a LAN with a few friends, fire up some old classics. The servers will be rolled out over the next few weeks and as they’re public servers, if you could let us know when they’re down or broken or otherwise not working, that’d be great. Check out the forum thread for more info.

As we outlined in our roadmap, 2013 will see the kick-off of regular Community Game Nights — and our first one is coming up on Monday, February 4.

To start off this fine new tradition we’ll be running with an old favourite: Team Fortress 2. Special servers will be set aside for the occasion, with the festivities taking off from 8:30 PM EST that night. Pencil it in your diaries! Then, grab a pen, and write over the pencil because you will be there.

We’ll have all-talk turned on and admins and staff members of all kinds jumping in, so put some time aside and watch this space for more details on what server to join. And get TF2 up to date, if you haven’t already! You monster.

games.on.net will be going offline between 10AM and 11AM tomorrow (Adelaide time) as we update the site, add in some changes, re-grease the pig, and generally twiddle the whatsits that makes whatever this whole thing even is work.

Editorial:

We’re working hard to ensure that games.on.net is the best PC gaming website in Australia, and we intend to keep pushing for that goal. You can expect an ever bigger focus on the PC into 2013, with more build guides, more tweak guides, and more hardware support and reviews.

We’re also looking at expanding our video content, and publishing more video reviews to give you a better idea of exactly how the game looks.

Finally, we’ll be scaling up our community involvement. The Community Soapbox section has been popular, but we’ll be doing more than that. Look forward to more Community Reviews, round-table discussions on issues, and more.

Community Game Nights and Steam Group:

As you may know, we’ve retired our unofficial but long-standing IRC channel, and moved our official admin support into Steam. There’s a number of reasons for this, including convenience, flexibility and ease of use.

We’re pleased to announce that since the change, membership in our Steam group has grown by 20%! We look forward to growing it even more.

So why should you join? Starting on 04/02/2013, we’ll be implementing the first of many Community Game Nights with a rousing session of Team Fortress 2. There’s nothing better than the games.on.net community spirit, and getting together to play games really highlights just what a great community we have.

We’ll also be looking at running regular Community VS. Admin Face-Offs — look for more information on those soon.

Competitions, and cheaper games for all Australians!

As you know, games.on.net recently announced our partnership with Green Man Gaming. Moving into 2013, we’ll be able to begin rolling out great deals for games.on.net members that allow you to bypass some of the world’s most inflated games prices and pay reasonable amounts for your games.

You can also look forward to more competitions in 2013. We’ve already been regularly giving away some fantastic hardware, and 2013 is going to be no different. In fact, it’s going to get even better.

File Library:

We will continue to work hard on improving our file library, above and beyond our recent release. This will be improved and expand much further than a simple (extremely limited) search. We’re talking:

Improved search and navigation.

Alphabetical listings. Search the games.on.net file library by application title, using a clear A-Z list navigation menu. Browse by genre (Action, Sports, RPG), Company (Activision, EA, 2K Games), or Platform (PC, Mac, iOS, Xbox 360).

Put games.on.net to work for you, by utilising RSS Feeds for individual file, application and company pages the latest content is delivered instantly to you.

We will be offering dynamic RSS feeds for:

• Individual applications, listing the latest file content for specified application
• All file library content – Most recent
• Video and Multimedia content
• Game Demos
• Client Patches
• Full Game Clients
• Mods and Maps
• Most downloaded files – For current week/month

Look forward to a clear visual presentation of genre, platform, content type (video, mod, full game client etc). Search results and main file library listing will display content type to provide a visual marker to the visitor for visual cue.

URL Restructuring

At present the file library offers URLs in a very ugly and unfriendly manner for both customers and Google. For example a file URL such as this one: http://games.on.net/file/50521/ would become a little easier to decipher, into something such like: http://games.on.net/file/50521/World_of_Tanks_8.0_Update_Teaser_Trailer

We will also be rolling out this change for all Application and Company pages located in our library. For example: http://games.on.net/app/6709/ would be changed to: http://games.on.net/app/6709/World_of_Tanks

As we head into Christmas, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to iron out more and more bugs and improve the way we do things around here at games.on.net.

Today we’ve very proud to announce that we’ve rolled out a major release from our development environment — here’s some of the things you’ll notice around the place.

General changes:

• The site has a new favicon, with the old legacy icon finally removed
• A bunch of very shameful spelling errors in static files cleansed and purged

News and comments system:

• Simple bbCode has now been added to the news comments system – you can use [b], [i], [img] and more.
• The news article search function has also been drastically overhauled to return far more relevant results.
• In case you missed it, we’ve entered into a partnership with Green Man Gaming, to give you the best possible prices!

File library changes:

• Application pages have been completely reworked: full app descriptions are back along with information on Developers, Publishers, File Types and Platforms
• Featured file content is now shown at the top of the File Library, highlighting the most popular content
• File filters return: see the latest Client Files, Demos, Full Clients, Media, Mods and more with a single click
• File search has been drastically improved and can be combined with platform searches: for example, “Application Name: Metal Gear Platform: PS3″ will return results matching both filters.
• Our file and application pages now include a handy link to search for that content on Green Man Gaming with one click.
• Video on demand – streaming content has now returned! It doesn’t suit everyone to download a 892.95 MB file like the Far Cry 3 Launch Trailer from our library. So to meet this need the file download pages now feature an HD stream (if one is available) for our members. You can also quickly copy and paste the [gonvideo] tag to use this content on our community forum or in HTML5 for a personal website.

Forum and Community:

• We have removed the words ‘view topic’ and ‘view forum’ from page titles, reducing clutter and making bookmarks easier to read
• Ever forgotten your username, but are absolutely certain you’ve registered? And the site tells you your email is already used? Well, you don’t have to fill out the contact form any longer: we’ve now got a simple automated system for you to request a new password along with your username by submitting your email address.
• Topic load speed has been drastically increased. We have heard your cries and are wiping away those tears with a number of backend improvements to decrease the page load time when reading topics in our community forum.

There’s more miscellaneous changes around the place, but that’s most of it! If you spot any problems, please let us know.

Regular readers of games.on.net will notice that we often like to link to Green Man Gaming — for the simple reason that the site delivers what are nearly always the best possible prices for Australian gamers.

Now, we’ve been working with the green men to take our relationship a step further. Today, we’re proud to announce that we’ve entered into an affiliate relationship with Green Man Gaming.
