Dungeonland

Know what makes a great party game? Action RPGs like Diablo. You get to run around with friends, blowing up monsters and collecting sweet loot. They can be really hard, but often they reward you so frequently that every little roadblock gives you the chance to pick up some amazing new mace or helmet.

Know what else works well with some pals? Those LEGO movie-themed games. They’re simple, colourful, easy, and relatively brainless.

Where the two meet, you’ll find Dungeonland, a co-operative hack-n-slash that feels a little like Diablo burst through the seven layers of Hell and found only the colourful, simplified world of the LEGO games. Except things aren’t made of blocks, and… well, it’s not actually anywhere near as fun as that sounds.

Part Dungeon Keeper, part Rollercoaster Tycoon, Dungeonland is a bit of an odd bird — but it’s an odd bird you can examine for yourself right now, as it’s just launched today. You can play it on your own or through co-op with friends, where we’re assured that “up to three players can play cooperatively to slaughter the monstrous staff and collect glittering piles of loot in fast-paced action gameplay. Meanwhile, a fourth player can take on the role of the Maestro himself, controlling the park’s traps and creatures, attempting to kill the other players, and mashing the “evil laugh” button as often as they can.”

Delightful! Behold this trailer below.

Dungeonland is available now on Steam and other outlets for $9.99, but you can grab it for $8.00 through Green Man Gaming with the code GMG20-PJFEW-Y16HK (but only before midnight on January 31st!). If you’re looking for a 4-pack though, Steam is the way to go.

Upcoming title Dungeonland, seen here in our “Most Promising RPGs of 2013 that you probably haven’t heard of” feature, is now available for pre-order, developers Paradox have announced.

Dungeonland is a multiplayer game in which three players take the role of adventurers in this dungeon-themed themepark, while a fourth gets to be the ‘Dungeon Master’ working against the others, laying traps and commanding monsters and what not. Your pre-order incentive is the ‘Grimoire Pack’, which is a set of perks that will allow the Dungeon Master to set sneakier, ickier traps, and meaner monsters to chew up your friends. Sounds like fun! Here is the pre-order trailer, nom nom nom.
