Torchlight II

If you’ve played Torchlight chances are you’re a fan of the Diablo franchise as well. With some of the development team working on the original Diablo games, there are a lot of similarities between the two franchises.

The next offering in the Torchlight saga, Torchlight 2 is coming out later this week, and it’s coming fully armed with everything you’ll need to make your own mods. When asked over at Gamespy about a Diablo remake using the modding tools, Max Schaefer, CEO of Runic responded with enthusiasm, “Oh gosh. I hope someone does that. I’d play it.”

The interview with Schaefer also covers how he considers Runic a Steam-based company, as well as how he’d like to infuse some Minecraft into the Torchlight series at some point, being tired of the action RPG genre. “I want to infuse some of the sandbox of Minecraft into this sort of game. So there’s more building and more resources, and a little less relentless monster grind. I love that about Minecraft, that you build a house, and you eventually build railways to your friends, and you do have monster fights. I’d have a little more monster involvement than that, and not just have a world of cubes, but you know, bring some of that sandbox rather than amusement park into the genre.”
