DmC Devil May Cry

It’s often claimed that the small audience of PC gaming means companies are less likely to bother with porting to the platform — but Capcom’s Alex Jones says it’s actually not a big deal at all.

“If you do your job right on the console side you can generally develop a PC version quite reasonably from both a budget and production logistics standpoint,” said Jones in an interview with TruePCGaming, speaking about the recent PC release of DmC Devil May Cry.

“Honestly the whole process was actually fairly devoid of drama or notable failures. We staggered the development such that we avoided long-running dependencies between the console and the PC team.”

Jones also addressed the importance of planning, saying “Much of the credit goes to both Ninja Theory, the primary developer and the creators of the game, and our PC development partners at Q-loc. Both groups did a great job. At the publishing level we decided very early in the console development that we were going to do a PC version and that allowed us to the proper planning and staging of the development to ensure as smooth a dev cycle as possible.”

DmC Devil May Cry

Angry about the reboot of Devil May Cry into DmC Devil May Cry? Well, you’re not alone: around 40 people have signed an online petition urging President Obama to pull the game from shelves.

I’m still not 100% sure the whole thing isn’t a joke, but get this: the petition actually claims that the game “violates our rights.”

“As a consumer to the Video Game Industry there is one Video Game that has caused a lot of controversy over the past few month’s,” opens the petition. “The name of the game is DmC: Devil May Cry made by Ninja Theory and Capcom. A majority of gamer’s are aggravated that this game has changed so much from it’s past predecessors and the game actually insults the consumers in-game.”

“We, as consumers did not want nor need this reboot and we believe it violates our rights to have a choice between the original’s or the reboot,” it continues. “This game is violating our rights as a consumer and we believe it should be pulled off shelves from game stores due to it’s insulting nature and the fact that it violates our rights.” So it’s violating our rights. Got it.

“Please Mr. Obama, look into your heart and make the decision that will please us Gamers.”

Meanwhile in the real world, we reviewed DmC Devil May Cry and thought it was pretty good.

DmC Devil May Cry

Leave all your expectations, whether they be good or bad, at the door — because nothing can prepare you for this reboot of Devil May Cry. It doesn’t matter whether you were part of the internet frenzy caused by images of a “new Dante”, or if you are going into this as an optimist. Ninja Theory and Capcom have managed to create the ultimate tale of angels, demons, oppression and defiance.

DmC Devil May Cry

Capcom have revealed that the delayed and outsourced port of DmC Devil May Cry finally has a release date: January 25, 2013.

The port will come with support for both AMD EyeFinity and AMD CrossFire, as well as for XBox 360 and third-party controllers. There will be no framecap limit, with Capcom suggesting that 60 FPS or higher will be the norm. Steam support will include Steam Cloud saving, achievements and leaderboards.

Devil May Cry

Capcom’s US producer Alex Jones has confirmed to Eurogamer that the upcoming Ninja Theory Devil May Cry re-interpretation (not a reboot, see) will be outsourced on PC and not developed internally at Ninja Theory.

Instead, the PC port has been outsourced to a Polish-based porting, localisation and QA specialist company by the name of QLOC, a company that Jones described as a “pretty tight outfit”. QLOC’s previous PC efforts for Capcom include Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition and Street Fighter x Tekken.

“Because it’s being developed out of house by a different developer from Ninja Theory there are logistical things involved. But the plan is to get it out shortly after the ship date for the console version,” said Jones. “I can’t give you a day and date. What I can say we’re endeavouring to get it out as shortly after the main game as possible so there’s as little a gap between those two as we can reasonably get. There is no word on what, if any, PC-specific features can be expected from the QLOC port.
