Destiny

Although it’s a far cry from actually meaning anything, the pre-order page for Bungie’s new title Destiny has been found to contain a reference to a PC platform in the source code.

The source code also contains references to the PS4, the XBox 720, the PS Vita and the Wii U as well however, so cynical gamers such as myself are taken the revelation with a grain of salt.

At the moment, Bungie and Activision have only confirmed Destiny for PS3 and Xbox 360 release, so — much like Grand Theft Auto V — us PC players will just have to wait and see.

In an early contender for “Statement Most Likely To Be Retracted And/Or Clarified Tomorrow”, Bungie’s co-founder Jason Jones has shed light on why the company won’t be bringing their new, quite excellent-looking shooter Destiny to the PC — because nobody plays shooters “the way they used to” anymore, including with keyboard and mouse.

“We did a bunch of ambitious things on Halo deliberately to reach out to people,” claimed Jones to Destructoid. “We limited players to two weapons, we gave them recharging health, we automatically saved and restored the game — almost heretical things to first-person shooters at the time.”

“We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo ’cause nobody wants to.”

Jones stops just short of directly suggesting that nobody plays shooters on PC anymore, but the implication is there. My prediction for tomorrow: “What we meant was that Halo changed the way first-person shooters worked forever, and that nobody plays ‘old-school’ shooters anymore. We’re not ruling out a release on PC at this time, but we have no current plans.”

Watch this space. In the meantime, you can watch this documentary on Destiny showing gameplay footage that came out overnight, courtesy of VG247.

Gaming giant IGN have received a leak from an inside source of dozens and dozens of images from Bungie’s upcoming project, Destiny — as well as an advertising agency-written roundup of how the game is to be marketed. “Our story begins seven hundred years from now in the Last City on Earth, in a Solar System littered with the ruins of man’s Golden Age,” begins the spiel.

“A massive, mysterious alien ship hangs overhead like a second Moon. No one knows where it came from or what it’s here for, but only that it’s our protector. Meanwhile, strange, alien monsters creep in from the edge of the universe, determined to take Earth and the Last City. We are young ‘knights’ tasked with defending the remains of humanity, discovering the source of these monsters and – eventually – overcoming it.”

Upon seeing the leak, Bungie confirmed that it was genuine, and reacted by posting a bunch of their own screenshots. Credit where credit’s due: head over to IGN and check out all the images.

According to a blog post by a senior DemonWare employee, they attended Bungie Day back in July and got a hands-on look at Bungie’s next big project, codenamed Destiny. The post, since removed, described the game as “quite like Halo.”

The day’s presentations were pretty comprehensive, with attendees apparently being shown “presentations covering everything from game story, factions, art, engineering, tool chain, graphics, audio, player investment mechanisms, player progression, UI, and web and mobile apps.”

“This is not a dedicated server game, but there is some simulation and coordination running in their server infrastructure. The game was up and down a lot, playing in a team of three, we did manage to experience entering a zone to find other players already taking on the bad guys, it’s cooperative so we helped out (mostly [name removed], I just died) before both groups went their separate ways,” said the employee. “Which is a pretty cool experience, making you feel you are part of a much larger populated world.”

“At the end of the day I was excited about the game, I like the feel of being in a large world with different destinations and the interactions along the way. It actually brought back a sense of exploration I recall from playing [Elite] many years ago, although there was no opportunity to shoot aliens in the face in Elite. I’m not fully sold on the appeal of being able to change the color of a weapon, but I guess it works in China, and customization and individual identity is a big theme for the game.”

He concluded saying the general consensus regarding the game was that it was “still quite like Halo” and “there is a lot of work still to be done.”

The studio behind the modern-classic Halo franchise Bungie are hard at work on their next title, an entirely new IP called Destiny. It’s still early days for Destiny, despite it being slated for a 2013 release, so there isn’t a lot of info out there on this upcoming title.

But in Bungie’s latest Mail Sack, an interesting tidbit of information was revealed. Amongst the rest of the delightfully silly questions and answers, “DJ Yella” asked “What does Bungie think of Rockstar Games and their works?” Sort of a loaded and random question, but it was chosen to answer out of all others, probably for this announcement, “We liked Red Dead Redemption so much that we hired Danny Bulla to come here and help us fill your next sandbox. He’s doing some amazing work and, so far, he hasn’t tried to lash any of us to a pair of railroad tracks.”

Interesting! ‘Filling our next sandbox’, eh? It’s pretty safe to assume from this that Destiny will be some sort of sandboxy game, or at least have sandboxy elements. An interesting departure from the Halo formula!
