Dark Souls

Some UK and Nordic customers who purchased boxed retail copies of Dead Island: Riptide for PC have found that the Steam codes they’ve been asked to activate actually end up redeeming them copies of Dark Souls instead.

The printing mix-up has been explained on the Steam forums by Deep Silver’s community manager, who said that “Dark Souls is an amazing game, but you probably bought Dead Island Riptide to play Dead Island Riptide! For those of you who don’t know this, Dark Souls is also not a Deep Silver game.”

“We are aware of this mixup by whoever printed these codes for a completely different game from a different publisher, and are working on a best possible solution to help affected players and retailers.”

If you’ve purchased a boxed retail copy of Dead Island: Riptide from the UK to save on unfair Australian price-gouging, and this happens to you, contact Steam Support and you’ll be given the correct game.

Meanwhile, we reviewed Dead Island: Riptide and called it “boring, by-the-numbers, fan service”. Read the full review here.

Dead Island Statue 580x300

When Deep Silver revealed that some versions of Dead Island: Riptide would ship with a statue of a brutally dismembered (and bikini clad) woman, it was almost immediately forced to apologise to outraged gamers. The publisher stated at the time that “we want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again.”

It has now emerged that Deep Silver’s remorse did not compel it to abandon plans to release the product, which many regard as demeaning to women. As reported by CNET, the statue has been popping up throughout Australia and Europe. The publisher’s parent company Koch Media has released a statement confirming that an “extremely limited quantity of the Zombie Bait edition has been made available to some retailers for those customers who wish to purchase it.”

Dead Island: Riptide

Techland seem to think they can breathe new life into the mutated, infected and somewhat overplayed zombie genre with their new game, Dead Island: Riptide — a spin-off of the original title in which you play the role of a survivor immune to the zombie virus, trying to escape yet another island. While the first game was fresh and lively, the sad truth is that the new game seems like a tired old clown performing the same old tricks in the hope of a new laugh.

Dead Island: Riptide

Man, I am so pumped to check out this new Dead Island DLC. A little belated, I thought, but I mastered the art of fly-kicking walkers in the face in the first one and enjoyed that very much a lot. What the hey, hey.

So I make a terrible faux pas when I sit down to check out its co-op by declaring way too out loud, “What took this DLC so long? Purna fly-kicks, aw yiss, youthful internet exclamation, hashtag, I’m too old to be presenting myself this way.”

“Dude, it’s not DLC,” someone hisses. “For heaven’s sake, keep your voice down.”

In an effort to dampen the controversy around their collectors edition statue of a torn-up woman’s torso, Deep Silver have pushed out this bit of footage showing some alpha gameplay from the upcoming Dead Island: Riptide. Driveable boats make an appearance, as do hub defence missions — which is basically horde mode. Check it out below!

Dead Island: Boobtide

Overnight, Deep Silver announced a limited edition of Dead Island: Riptide and revealed that it would come with, among other things, a “grotesque take on an iconic Roman bust”. Or, in other words, a statue of… some boobs. In a bikini. With a bunch of skin flayed off.

This naturally drew the ire of basically everybody who saw it, and Deep Silver have now issued an apology for the statue, saying “For the limited run of the Zombie Bait Edition for Europe and Australia, a decision was made to include a gruesome statue of a zombie torso, which was cut up like many of our fans had done to the undead enemies in the original Dead Island.”

“We sincerely regret this choice. We are collecting feedback continuously from the Dead Island community, as well as the international gaming community at large, for ongoing internal meetings with Deep Silver’s entire international team today. For now, we want to reiterate to the community, fans and industry how deeply sorry we are, and that we are committed to making sure this will never happen again.”

Genuinely poor judgement, or calculated marketing stunt? We may never know.

Dead Island: Riptide

It was announced last week that Dead Island: Riptide will be released on April 26 in Australia, and we also knew that there will be a new character and setting for the game.

Now, in a press release, the new character and setting have been revealed. The newest character to join the troupe is one John Morgan, a failed Navy Seal, or Marine or some such, that has conveniently been training himself in hand-to-hand combat. “His career in the US Navy has not taken off as he originally had envisioned, so he spends his time as a cook on a military ship,” the release explains.

“Little does he know that soon he will have to bring his skills into practice when the ship nears the island of Palanai.”

Speaking of Palanai, the island’s main town Henderson is the game’s new setting. Previously a resort for wealthy vacationers, now it is a hell-hole ravaged not only by hordes of the undead but monsoons as well. Many buildings and streets are flooded or destroyed, leaving the survivors in a less-than-ideal zombie-killing setting.

Dead Island: Riptide

The next installment of the Dead Island series has just been given a release date: Dead Island: Riptide will be launched on April 23 in the US and Canada, and April 26 everywhere else, Australia obviously being included in everywhere else.

The sequel to 2011′s zombie shooter will add a new character, a new setting and a darker plot that the creative director sat down to talk about over here — and you should check out the game’s CGI trailer (bring a box of tissues) over here, too.

Dead Island: Riptide

Dead Island: Riptide is on it’s way, and Deep Silver’s creative director, Sebastian Reichert, has been out about discussing the new setting, character and plot.

“The request from the fans after the success of Dead Island was very clear – they want more and they want it now! However, creating a whole new setting will take a lot of time,” Reichert said to VG247. “So the question shifted to ‘do we have enough ideas in the same setting to offer another great experience, or do we have to shift the setting to deliver a full experience?’ Dead Island: Riptide is the answer to that. We changed the setting partially, built in new features fitting to this different environment and now we make sure the experience rocks again.”

“Plot-wise, ‘darker’ is good description of where we’re heading, but of course we stay bright and beautiful on the outside. We are taking a very special step in this instalment and we are looking forward to see how the fans react to it,” he went on. “There will be a new character, and yes we have a lot of ideas as mentioned before. There will be whole lot more to do. One small example would be that the game now tracks which weapons you use and mirrors that in your proficiency with those weapons.”

What do you think? Are you jungle-bound for more zombie slayage? Or do you think it’s simply too similar, too soon, too much, oh God why? Let us know what you think.

Ack, right in the feels! My fragile, fragile heart! This new Dead Island: Riptide trailer may not be as effective as the original viral video, but it’s still more than a little heart wrenching. A couple, and Australian couple, I note (see the flag?), are vacationing to their local Zombie Island, when their boat, somehow, is overrun by zombies. As sad as it is, I can’t help but feel they might have given up a little too soon. I’ve seen enough zombie movies and played enough Left 4 Dead to know when it’s time to give up, and that ain’t it. Maybe I’m wrong. Tell us what you think.

Deep Silver has a couple of good’uns in store for this week’s festivities in Seattle. The publisher has promised to give demonstrations of both Dead Island: Riptide and Sacred 3 in addition to the previously detailed side-scrolling tie-in Sacred Citadel. Both sequels have been very much under wraps until now; Dead Island: Riptide was announced in June, but immediately went silent, giving no further details on the follow-up other than to confirm it is a full, stand-alone release rather than an expansion, and Sacred 3 was revealed in early August as an afterthought to Sacred Citadel’s announcement. Expect details of both enigmatic titles to emerge from PAX Prime, which runs August 31 through September 2.
