Clockwork Empires, if you weren’t already aware, is the upcoming title from Gaslamp Games (who you may remember from Dungeons of Dredmor), and sees you managing a steampunk/magic/colonial Victoria-era colony, expanding, conquering, trading, building and generally having a great time and probably cackling as well. I’m looking forward to it!
But what about your citizens? Well, Gaslamp have revealed that they’re working on ways to randomise the personalities, needs and desires of your town’s inhabitants, including by giving them such traits as “Hat Enthusiast” and “Bee Fancier”. Other traits include such things as “Fishy Behaviour”, which may make them behave in odd fashions such as being obsessed with the sea or the ocean, or perhaps “taking a long walk into the water, never to return”.
“Characters will have the ability to gain or lose traits due to traumatic/ecstatic/sublime experiences,” writes Daniel Jacobsen on the game’s blog, “and will also form strong attachments to things that have been important to them in their lives – other characters, other items, or other places. This is not good if the place is “the mysterious statue on the outside of the town”, or if the item is ‘the mysteriously glowing jar with a skull in it’.”
