the point is blatantly obvious, you missed mine. All I'm saying is that the reason they decided to give people "the right to bear arms" in the first place is (in simplest terms at least) to give them the ability to do exactly what he is proposing, revolt against a government that they no longer believe represents them (again, in simple terms).
Colbert makes gags that are funny in one dimension, but what actually makes them interesting is that they tickle a lot of genuine issues in many others. "Look how crazy this guy is, who wouldn't trust him with guns?" is funny, but really the "crazy guy" is a perfect avatar of American culture post-Civil War. And that sums it up really, the gun laws aren't necessarily the problem here, its the 19th century mindsets that people are still brought up with.
