So just got FTL.
After doing the tutorial I started a new game.

Lasted literally 15 seconds. I have no idea what I am doing.

It was just unlucky. First ship encounter on the first game I played had some funky
Drone which messed my **** up.

How do you kill the guys boarding your ship (aside from opening the airlocks). My crew just dies in seconds against those marine guys.

Make use of your medical bay to heal them - you can often force them to fight in the medical bay which heals you as you go.

Otherwise just swap your crew out as they are getting injured.

What about drones? Can't seem to do anything about them. At the start at least

Watch the video Diamondd put up on the first page. Most of my starting tips and knowledge came from that video and also the tutorial. "ensign Cox, nooo! We hardly knew ye!" hahaha classic.

I had 400 scrap but no fuel, everything was going so well, already had maxed cloak and level 3 shields, was just holding out for a better weapon but didn't come across any stores for ages and with no fuel I got stuck fighting the rebel fleet with piddling weapons dangit.

The engie ship annoys me sometimes. You can't really target anything, you just have to hope the drone takes out the important stuff.

I finally managed to down the boss on easy. Here's how I did it:

Ship: Federation Kestral
Crew:
- 4 Humans (Manning weapons, pilot, shields and engines)
- 1 Engi (repairs)
- 3 Mantis (fighting)

Shields x 4
Engines x 3
O2 x 1
Weapons x 5
- Burst Laser II
- Ion I
- S. Bomb I
- Pegasus III
Med Bay X 1
Teleport X 1
Cloak x 3

Piloting x 1
Sensors x 2
Doors x 1

22 power bars
Started with around 20 missles

Strategy:
1st Phase: Teleport into missle bay to destroy it. Then do Busrt, Ion and Beam. Missles target shields. Once shields are down, use laser and ion to keep them down and destroy ship. Used cloak to hide from missles and lasers.

2nd Phase: Teleport into missle bay to destroy it. Then Burst and beam. Use missles to take out drones to stop boarding and S. Bomb on shields. Used laser and missles to then keep shields and drones down. Was lucky to cause a breach in the drone bay and a fire in the shield bay. Used cloak to hide from drones. Shields held the rest.

3rd Phase: Used laser and ion to get energy shield down. Teleport into missle bay to destroy it. Then burst. Used missles and S. Bomb on shields to disable. Used ion and laser to keep them down and destroy ship. A fire started in the shield bay and spread over the whole ship.

One thing that bugs me about the game is the inconsistency around weapons. One run through I got 2 pegasus launchers (4 rockets at a time baby) by the 5th sector (got killed by a ship with lvl 3 shields and a stack of drones. Damn thing wouldn't take a hit) and other times you get nothing but a couple of lasers. Not sure if it's meant to be like this or not...

It is completely random, that's half the frustration but also the charm of the game. I was tracking along very nicely last night, got a scrap arm, lvl 2 doors, strong shields etc. Ran out of missiles in a crucial fight and got rolled. Part and parcel methinks!!

Yeah, the randomness can facepalm you sometimes. I think the game encourages a well rounded build rather than a specialist build due to it's randomness. So try not to end up relying on one type of attack for example.

Yeah defiantly agree with that. But there are some vital components I think:
- Full shields: You won't survive the drone waves or super weapon attack of the boss without them (unless you have cloak, but that doesn't always charge in time)
- Missiles: Preferably the Pegasus launcher because it fires two for the price of one. Important for the second phase of the boss otherwise your missiles just get shot down.
- Teleporter: If you can't get your hands on missiles, this is the next best thing. Easy to teleport into the weapons hold of the boss and take them down.
- Sensors lvl 2: I find these great because you can target rooms with their personnel to take them out.

Anything I've missed?
