Why would you have an iPhone and not jailbreak it? SBSettings is essential.

The only reason I went with the iPhone was because the other brands make 15 phones and support none of them very well, along with multiple versions of the same OS for different phones, it's all just a mess. Will be interesting to see how W8 phones are handled..

Oh I know about SBSettings (and had it on one of my Jailbroken phones), but sometimes when you have work supplied iPhones, jailbreaking them is against the rules (at least with the companies I have worked at).

I had no other issues with the iPhone, other than they couldn't supply simple shortcuts as standard features like every other smart phone has for the last 10 years. I am still considering changing back when the 5 is finally released, but unless they finally include that feature I can see me selling it again shortly after.

For reference sake I still have my iPad3 as I still think it has better apps and support compared to any other tablet on the market. If that changes in the next 12 months (with the release of Windows 8, and or better tablet supported apps for Android) then I may eventually switch away from it as well. But for now, and into the forseeable future, ipad > * (all other tablets).

Yeah it was one of the biggest factors playing on my mind when I changed back to Android, the only reason I ended up taking the leap is I realised I change phones like most people change underwear, so if android gave me any grief I would simply buy another iProduct

it is a mess, I don't think I'd be a particularly happy Android user if I was an "average" user. Waiting for Google updates to go to manufacturers, manufacturers updates to go to your handset and the handset update being rolled out by your carrier would be an absolute nightmare.

BUT, rooting and flashing whatever ROM you want gives you everything you could possibly need. Alternatively if you stick with Google phones you're pretty well set on the support front too. Not going to deny that an iPhone is easier to live with out of the box though (minus iTunes  ).

You honestly think an "average" phone user cares about OS updates? The only people I know that care about OS features and such are here.

no, that's not what I meant at all. I know most people wouldn't sit there caring about an update that they don't even know about, but the point is updates provide better experiences.

my first Android phone was a HTC Legend and out of the box that thing was a dog. As an "average" user if I compared that to an iPhone or Galaxy S or whatever I'd feel like my phone was complete ****. Instead, I flashed a gingerbread ROM and my performance increased dramatically, making it the bargain buy of the decade for me at the time.

whether an average user knows an update is out there or not, they're still missing out on a better experience.

I have been suffering the pain of my HTC legend for far too long. What the hell is a gingerbread ROM and how do I flash it?

I'm expecting another lawsuit coming Samsung's way.

Remember those Apple stores? Well Samsung has got one now.

Ha, funny.

Unfortunately, patent law confuses me without some more study, so I haven't been able to write about this for GON.

The entire patent system is kinda odd. Best thing about it is the 'patent pending' joke in the inventor episode of The Simpsons.

well, have a look at CyanogenMOD for starters, that's where I got going.

fair warning though, the Legend has one of THE most painful rooting procedures around (unless someone has got a cleverer way since I did mine). If you're technologically minded its nothing to be afraid of, just make sure you follow the instructions :P
