London Olympics 2012 swimming, China cheating again?

Unread postby Fitzad » 31 Jul 12, 2:41 pm

Couldn't see any topic about the Olympics.

Been watching the swimming and I call BS on the female Chinese swimmer Ye Shinwen. As far as I know she has won all here events so far and by good margins. Not only that she posted a faster time in the free style leg of the individual medley than the men's and shaved 7 secs off her PB......GTFO

I'll doubt she'll get caught since China have probably learnt from their last endeavours with performance enhancing drugs and will have used new and undetectable drugs this time.

Oh and I forgot to mention she is 16!

She took 5 seconds off her PB, not 7.

And also it should be pointed out that Stephanie Rice in 2008 set an Australian record of 4:37.18, and then in 2009 smashed it by ~6 seconds - 4:31.46. So this massive change in PB is not unheard of in this event.

She also only posted a faster time in the final 50m of the freestyle at 28.93s compared to 29.10, far less than a second, and overall she was still 23s slower than the male winner. So while the comparison is technically correct, it is very flawed.

Steph's improvement was, at least in part, due to going from regular swimsuits to the "super suit" which let a lot of athletes set a lot of records. Her's was actually the last of the super suit records to fall.
So it's not unheard of, no, but that's a flawed comparison. ;)

Given China's history I can sort of understand people being a little dubious but... this is why we have testing. People are tearing into the girl without any real hint she's done anything wrong, other than the fact she swam a great race. Which is a bit sad. :(

Just under 7 secs

Super suits played a big part in the records set from 2000 to 2010 (Not sure of years but some where around there) hence them being banned now but this chick is beating even those records, not that it is impossible to break them. I'm not saying that with out a doubt she's cheating but given china's history and her record breaking performances IMO she is.

Also just saw this which I found funny considering this guys history:

Her previous PB set at the 2010 Asian Games, a time of 4:33.79.

Umm wouldn't it be expected that someone who is only 16 would be able to beat their pb because they are still developing?

was it racist when people suggested Wiggins must have been cheating to dominate the Tour de France so convincingly?

no, and neither is this. Personally I'm not complaining about either case but racism has nothing to do with it.

Here's a good reason for an increase in performance....

"Ye has trained in Australia with two well-recognized coaches, Ken Wood and Denis Cotterell. Wood has had a contract with the Chinese Swimming Association since 2008, and 15 of China's swimmers in London, plus five of its relay swimmers, have trained at his academy north of Brisbane, rotating through in groups for a couple of months at a time, he told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

"I get paid per month, per swimmer four times more than I do with my home swimmers," Wood said from Australia after Ye qualified comfortably fastest Monday in the 200 medley heats. China pays him bonuses for Olympic gold and for swimmers' personal bests, and he also got a bonus for Ye's 200 medley world championship win in 2011."

Wood goes on to talk about how the Chinese Coaches concentrate on stroke technique but don't have the high level knowledge of bio-mechanics that can help to shave seconds off - which means that he gets to refine and perfect already strong swimmers

If you want an amazing performance that nobody has raised an eyebrow about - try the men's coxless pair Heat 1 - NZ turned in a World Record performance - leaving the French in their wake by 9 seconds and taking 6 secs off the previous World Record. The field of five straggled out over 32 secs so they really were rowing against themselves.

For comparison Heat 2 was 3 seconds between first and last...

Maybe the memories of the Rainbow Warrior really are still that strong...

Haven't watched any of the Olympics, I have no TV. :P
I do love all the drama it causes though.
