What keyboard should I get?

Unread postby PirateEggs » 29 Jul 12, 7:31 pm

I need a new keyboard, and have needed one for a while. I just can't find any good keyboards, that I like and find nothing 'wrong' with. I'm just too picky. :/
I'm simply too happy with my current keyboard to get rid of it, okay, maybe 'happy' is the wrong word to use, but I like it, more than I hate it so I can't really decide what to do. I want, and need to get a new keyboard but I honestly have no idea what kind to get and I was hoping you guys, and gals, would be able to possibly help me find a keyboard that I like.
I guess I should probably state what I am looking for in a keyboard, and what I want and don't want it to do / be able to do.

Well, I type a lot, not really a lot, but enough to need a keyboard that is easy and comfortable to type on / with.
Macros and / or functionality buttons are a pretty high priority: You know music buttons, play, pause etc ... Launch program buttons, that are like, out of the way but not to far or hard to read if I want to open something.
Doesn't really bother me if it's mechanical or not, my current keyboard isn't and it's lasted me ~3 years and I treat it like ... Image ... sometimes, well, when ever it doesn't work properly. I hate wireless. Derp ...
< $100 ... I don't want to spend too much on a keyboard, and I'm not going to be getting it that soon, or near in the future, probably a few more months yet until I'll actually get one.
Needs a numpad, <3 numpad.
Backlight would be nice, I guess, although I can type without needing to look at the keyboard so it doesn't really matter that much, just kind a 'Hey I have a shiny keyboard, u jelly bro?" kind of thing, I don't know. Doesn't bother me either way.

Honestly, I have no ideas at all, I was looking at getting the Logitech G510, did get one, but they had none in stock when I was going to buy it, so I changed my mind and stuck with my current one and never actually got it. T'was hard for me to make up my mind on something, I'm really indecisive on everything and usually just put up with problems because they're too hard to fix.

tl;dr?
I need a new keyboard with a numpad, possibly lights, macros / functionality keys and isn't going to cost me any assortment of appendages.

Yeah, I read through most of that. I was thinking of posting in there, but I thought I would make my own topic. Didn't want to hijack a thread and make it about me. :/

Was just asking as I was keen to see what you were leaning towards (based off that thread) :)

I can't complain about the G19 I have, but I don't use my gaming pc that much anymore :(

Well, from that thread, and a couple other various sources on the 'net. I've found a few that I like.
Logitech G510 (I just like Logitech, and it's got pretty lights. >.< )
BlackWidow (which ever one has the backlight)
Corsair K60 or K90 (probably more so the K60 though since it's cheaper.)
ROCCAT Isku

Not really much else. There are too many choices and it's hard for me to make up my mind between them. :/

There is a new blackwidow released with green backlights... and probably some other changes that look ok on paper but in reality make no noticeable change over the old blackwidow.

New BlackWidow has a matte surface on the non-key-area, rather than glossy. That alone almost makes me want to upgrade :P

Yeah, I looked a bit at that, and it doesn't really look that great, and green ... yeah, no ...
The lighting is a bonus really, if it has it, it has it, if it doesn't, it doesn't, pretty novel thing really.

Yeah, the gloss, not a fan, my case is gloss and it gets so dusty, well the dust is a lot more noticeable, same with my Xbox, stupid glossy look.

Probably going to get the keyboard around Christmas time, most places tend to have sales, should be able to find something I like. I hope. :)

If the BlackWidow is appealing to you, get a Ducky Shine

I've looked at the Ducky Shine, but it doesn't have the extra buttons I need.

I'm actually leaning toward the Isku, it looks really good and it's pretty cheap.

I have the K60 and it's great.

The Roccat got binned by Atomic mag from memory.

I tend not to read too many of those sites, most places are really biased or paid to alter their opinions.

When ever I find a keyboard I think I like, I will always find something that makes me want to stay away from it. Hence why I've been putting up with my current keyboard for so long, ~2 years.
The K60 looks really good, but again, lacking the extra keys I want and the K90, a little out of my price range, I don't want to spend much than $100, and $125 max, I know, if I want a keyboard to do all I want, and need it to do I need to spend the money, but I'm not really a super gamer, I mostly play Minecraft. :P

I think you'll find Atomic mag/site aren't shills (at least in my experience - if it is advertising they are very clear, as indicated by their 'pc builds' section).

Personally I think the build quality & design of the K60/K90 means it will last forever - but then I am an eternal optimist :)

The Ducky Shine does have a lot of those 'media' keys. Also has a few launch keys, although I don't think they're programmable. It really is a great keyboard.
