Mellie's Random Game Discussion Thread

Finished a weekend full of Path of Exile. WOW, what a fantastic game! Really, everything i wanted from Diablo 3 and more.

Have to say thanks to Marius for planting the seed in my head long ago in these forums to play it :)
Was going to wait until a full release, but thought i might as well jump into the open beta weekend, i am SO glad i did. Played co-op with the bf almost 12 hours, got kicked maybe 5 times due to server load/maintenance, but was usually able to go right back in. Ping from the Singapore servers so good, it's hardly noticeable.

The game plays like a full release already. It probably has LESS bugs than most PC full releases in it's Beta!
ARPGs have been my favorite co-op genre on PC for awhile. TQ, NWN2, Silverfall, Sacred, Dungeon Siege and Diablo3 - I've had fun with these games, but not like this. PoE is just so different, from the way the potions work, to the skill runes, the passive skill tree, the shop currency system - it just feels so fresh! The maps are beautiful, there are a ton of blue/yellow monsters, and most importantly - the loot drops are GREAT.

I gave decent money to Crate on Kickstarter for Grim Dawn, and the main thing that game will have over PoE so far is the offline play - but PoE is free!!! Not only free, but the micro-transactions will not affect gameplay in any way. Runic did a great thing making Torchlight 2 so cheap, cause there is definitely some competition in this genre now!

What Grinding Gear Games have done here is awesome, amazing and wonderful. Indy companies continue to show AAAs how it's done. Screenshots and videos do NOT do this game justice, if you are into this genre - you need to play this game :D

Argh! Paragraphs please. :(

@DarkMellie

Play Shadows of the Damned. I don't get achievements, what's so fun about getting some numbers?

More God of War 3 for me. Lol Hermes, such a push over. Wasn't that fast in the first place and he gets pwnt by...I have no idea, how'd he even get hit by that thing?

Story is getting pretty zzz, nothing really interesting is happening, you're just going around killing gods. The story in the previous two (imo) wasn't *that* amazing either (mainly because plot developments don't actually happen all that often) but at least when plot did happen it was generally fun or entertaining. GoW3's story isn't *as* bad as I was originally expecting (so far) but not mcuh interesting has happened either, just god killing as i've said. Also what happened to the huge scale and awesome all out war that was promised in the opening sequence? :S

Combat still remains a huge improvement over the previous games. Love how they they implemented Chain of Olympus's spell selection into the items. :D

Is Hermes in GoW3 the one where you cave his face in then rip his head off?

Hermes is the one that runs really fast. Helios you rip his head off but you don't cave his head in so i'm unsure if you're talking about him or someone else. Though Helios was pretty meh as well but he didn't actually come across as an actual boss fight like Hermes did.

Now that I think about it another thing I'm feeling with GoW3 is that it doesn't have the same 'feel' as the first two games, it's hard to describe but the PSP games also lacked this 'feel'. I think the first two games felt much more like an adventure with a lot more awe and wonder about them than GoW3 and the PSP ones.

@Revengous, Dark Souls is still on the menu, just need to wait for the urge to farm. Really want to upgrade my armour before progressing and that means chunks.

Achievements are the greatest thing to ever happen to my gaming. I approach each game almost strategically and ensure I do the things I need to do to get the cheevo's throughout. It's caused me to revisit my library and replay games that I'd given up on, and helped me rediscover fun in the process. I still play games because they're fun and would never play a **** game just for achievements... and certain titles (like NBA 2k12) I just play because...

Dunno, I feel really strongly about achievements and it does at times inform my purchase decisions... like Saints Row 2, I own it but wish I'd never bought it as the achievements are ridiculously difficult and the gameplay so sub-par that it just sits there... but other games with poor gameplay get a caning from me because it's fun to hunt the achievements.

Personally I'm not a big fan of achievements. I remember a time when the longevity of a game was based on just simply wanting to replay such a awesome game rather than going back and playing scavenger hunt with random hidden objects. I mean it's not like I get a leg of ham for these achivements or anything...

Finally figured out the train station battle in Syndicate and am progressing. Very pretty game and surprisingly good fun with the breach elements (especially persuade). The Xbox icons on-screen do my frigging head in though.

There's a metric crap-ton of achievements in The Secret World. Currently, I think someone has killed almost 100,000 zombies just to stay on top of the zombie killer leaderboards. Think the killing achievements stop at 10K though. Though they could go all the way to 100K.

I partially agree. There have been games that I enjoyed enough that I would go and do "achievement" style things in just because I enjoyed playing the game so much. An example would be WoW where before the achievement system was added I would do things like uncover the entire map, complete all of the seasonal events when there weren't rewards for them, or try doing something silly like take on 2-3 bosses in a dungeon at once. People thought I was silly for wanting to do that kind of stuff; the same people who are achievement **** in the game now.

However sometimes achievements can be cool. But getting one for something insignificant like collecting a medpack or completing the first level of the first mission in a game I think is silly.

Also OMD2 is pretty cool, but playing solo so far, the game feels like it was designed especially for co-op rather than both.

Speaking about influencing purchasing decisions, wasn't going to get Borderlands 2, but the picture of the redhead siren in Jess' news article today has me reconsidering.

UT3 really is a classic gem.

A few rough edges still .. which fade the more you don't play it .. but all in all, it's a damn fine engine and game.

Can't wait till DayZ becomes less of an alpha. My whole team wiped solely because the game bugged and randomly broke my legs. -_- I might have been hit by a zombie (how I don't know as they weren't actually near me at the time) but even so the notion that they can somehow break your legs by swiping at your face is even more ridiculous and frustrating given how game ending breaking your legs is.

So anticlimactic losing because of a bug especially since we had managed to take out other players at the airfields WHO HAD A CAR. /rage

Also loved how after I died and respawned I proned and afk'd for 2 minutes and when I came back my legs were broken again and was bleeding out YET NOTHING WAS AROUND ME!!!!! hnng

Just spent 3 hours playing Burnout Paradise, doing the multiplayer challenges with 2 friends, heaps of fun, makes it worth having a 2nd copy (My first one is on my ps3 -_-).

As we collectively spent $12 on 3 copies of the game during summer steam sales, money well spent!
