Problem with creating a server... bot balance

Unread postby Si Botak » 7 Mar 07, 10:40 pm

Hi fellas.

First of all, congrats to Ark and the team. My housemate and I have been watching out of this for a looooooong time, and it looks bloody marvelous. :)

Quick Q/bug/PBKAC issue when it comes to creating MP games...

When we don't feel like playing online, feel like practising against fodder, or can't log in to a server, we usually try to create a coop game. But when we do so (Max players=2, Bots=48, Bot Ratio=50) and the game starts, we have the two of us on the Aussie side, and we have 23/24 bots on the EN side (ie no friendly bots).

We've replicated on both machines. We're both patched to 1.41 with the mod at version 1.0

SP works fine. In fact, it's so beautiful it made me weep like a schoolgirl and contemplate amending my will to leave the dev team the soul of my first born child with or without said offspring's consent... I know there's been some criticism of the sight picture on the F88 optics, personally I didn't notice (it has been a few years since I took a sight picture tho :) )

But creating MP games... yeah I dunno. Maybe I'm selecting the "Si Botak is a butt-smoking pinhead" tickbox in the create server screen, but we just can't get any kind of MP game happening with bots on the same side. We've tried increasing max players to see if that has any correlation, but it hasn't....

Any ideas?

me and beef had the exact same problem, im pretty confident its due to the botconfig that comes with the mod. We found that by setting it to 63 in the botconfig, it made the 48 irrelevent, so maybe check that. Cause the game only compensates for the 48 it thinks its getting, it forgets about the rest and just places them, we configured the botconfig to 63 bots, and in game made bot ratio 80, and number of bots to 48, and that gave us 23 on aus, 40 something on mec. It seems random depending on the map though. I may be wrong, but give it a go

Yeah I'm not sure what the deal is with bot balance... the team often test things in Co-op since we are a fairly small group, and the bots are always highly unbalanced. Although we never usually bother adjusting them, we just kick their arses.

Not sure it is something we can fix, or just the way it works.

if you want the standard BF2 bot server settings to work, ignore botconfig.exe
that is, for example, if you are setting up a server via BF2ServerLauncher.exe

go to your ai folder

default location for client install (local host games):
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2aus\ai

default location for dedicated server files:
C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Server\mods\bf2aus\ai

open AIDefault.ai with wordpad

change...
aiSettings.overrideMenuSettings 1
aiSettings.setMaxNBots 23
aiSettings.maxBotsIncludeHumans 0
aiSettings.setBotSkill 0.8

to...
aiSettings.overrideMenuSettings 0
rem aiSettings.setMaxNBots 23
rem aiSettings.maxBotsIncludeHumans 0
rem aiSettings.setBotSkill 0.8

Well done on a great mod :)
one of the best imo!
