HP ENVY dv7 7205tx Trouble

Unread postby martin » 22 Dec 12, 11:09 am

Hey everyone

My father has gone and bought the new HP ENVY dv7 7205tx and I must say it is a piece of ****, from the first boot it was sluggish with random errors like internet explorer crashing to vlc crashing with no errors also many other installs not finishing.
Now he mainly got it for Far Cry 3 and I have been messing around with it on all LOW settings with res of 1024 x 800 and1680 × 1050 and there is no point to which it is smooth or acceptable.

I have updated all drives also uninstalling and getting new ones and this has not helped, I cannot do a fresh windows reinstall as HP don't give you a copy of operating system.

Spec List:
OS: Windows 8 64bit
CPU: I7-3630Qm Processor (2.4Ghz, 6Mb L3 Cache)
Memory: 8192Mb 1333Mhz
Hard drive: 32Gb + 2Tb Hdd (5400Rpm)
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce Gt 650M Graphics 2Gb Gddr5

Please any info will be much appreciated,
Thanks Martin

Hmm a laptop....

Ok that makes it reeeeeeeeelly hard . Why ppl buy laptops to play games is beyond me.

Havng moaned and said that, all i can think of is:

You'll have to be running off the power supply as it will prolly underclock when on batt mode
Also have you tried something like msi afterburner to try overclock the video card?

Other than those only tiny tweaks like turning windows aero off (changing desktop back to classic) to reduce gpu usage while gaming

or if its not too late, take it back and get a desktop from a proper puter shop (not a name brand)

Some one else might have other things to try but kinda hard

shouldn't be confusing anymore :P

I would much rather have built him a desktop but he is... unbelievably stubborn. It was hard enough getting him to buy a PC over a dual booted mac :/

I have actually tried returning the look to classic over metro - but the computer crashed and forced a reinstall *sigh* the joys of win8

If you are sticking with this laptop for his gaming I suggest you check that the Nvidia control panel is forced to use Nvidias graphics over the intergrated graphics. Also note that when plugged in some laptops automatically begin using a better graphical processor is they have one available. If that fails try downloading new nvidia drivers from their website.

Also go through the HP bloatware installed, one by one check which ones you need (via a google search) that will instantly cut down the slowdowns. I suggest you remove everything that is not needed but keep ones such as the hotkey software, drivers etc.
If you download http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/download/977401f430f892662f302243ff61e113/ and do a system scan and paste the log file into this thread I will be able to tell you what is and is not needed. I do this sort of thing all the time.

Absolutely. Don't mention you messed with the software tho, just point out it doesn't work. Where did you get it from? How much was it?

i believe it was purchased from harvey norman for $1710, I remember my father mentioning that it was the last in the state so will they just find another or would i be able to exchange for another brand completely?

Is there porn saved on it  :!: :?:

Did you create recovery disks when you got the lappy, if so re-setup the lappy. Then return it.

Id be very suprised if they dont at least fix the laptop even if you did mess around with it and/or remove something because I imagine average joe does such things all the time. If they want to keep the laptop to fix it Id recommend keeping it over the xmas break because I can recall a few times where they just work the next day or two.

The laptop is completely clean apart from Far Cry 3 as he only got it 5 days ago but apart from that there is nothing else on it because nothing else will install successfully such as
Java, Firefox, Flash, QuickTime, itunes, adobe products or even word products and im not joking just errors with no reason or error code

and no porn well i hope not and if there is i would rather not want to know what my father is looking at ha ha

If you cant install simple things like Firefox then something bigger may not be helping this issue, it could even be Windows 8.

I know HN procedure. You are fully entitled to a DOA swapover if they can't get it going either. To either another of the same or an equal priced machine. Take it back to where you got it from, take it straight to the technician, and say what the problem is, then ask politely for a changeover of the machine. 5 days is definitely a DOA.

The installer issue sounds like a 32/64bit conflict...

Im not to familiar with win8, but you should have gotten recovery disc's and HP's have a startup detection within the bios, if your not getting to bios, let it charge over night, then remove the battery in the morning, push the power button in for a minute or two, then stick it in and see if it will boot...

If you can get to bios or the startup menu (i think its esc of f10/f12 by default) run diagnostics which will let you know if there is an issue with the hardware, if there is warranty job it is. if there isnt, stick the recovery disc in and reinstall.

If you can get it to boot, go into the OS and look at the drivers your using for the geforce card and make sure they are up to date, then i would look at setting it up to run in 'high performance mode' within power setting via control panel and seeing if that makes a difference.

HP's can be temperamental, but over all they can be a decent machine and the envy series was decent but not too beeefy from memory. Good luck

i am able to get to the bios but there is no problem found within hardware and there doesn't seem to be any discs with comp that i can find or my father knew about, the nvidia drivers were the newest release but also one of the few installs that actually worked.

the power mode was already set to performance as this was the first step i took to fight the stuttering, The computer only gets to the windows logo then sits for a while then restarts, windows does not seem to say that it had errors booting......
I have called the store and will be taking it back today, *cross fingers* i get to change model at least and they didn't magically find another

Thanks for all the help everyone, much appreciated
