It's not like the active forum members haven't done their best to warn GoN.

Awsome. I have a thesis to finish anyway.

thanks for all the fish

Not that I play a whole heap, but I seem to recall a time on Arma1 where we passworded the server. Stopped a lot of the foreign morons that were the cause at the time. Surely trying that out first is better than a final solution first? At least then the people paying for it ('node subscribers) don't get punished. But not missing it at the moment.

So let me get this straight..
Instead of actually policing the server and doing their jobs, the admins shut the server down?

If so, that's **** hilarious.

Sigh... so much for ArmA being a mature community, I'd blame DayZ for introducing the rabble to the game but I have a feeling that it's a few of the regulars acting irresponsibly too.

Anyhow, I'm done with it until ArmA 3.

Haha, I don't play any GoN Servers but I've been following the drama with this server for a while now since regular users began complaining (and rightly so) at the lack of moderation. I can't say I'm surprised really, just another nail in the coffin for Games on Net.

Arma3 will probably have even more rabble.

Not that it's some Arma exclusive problem. Stuff like this happens all the time (if not worse) in other games.

The smart solution would be to either completely sack the existing admin team for being incompetent/uninterested in the game, or at the very least recruit some new admin that are involved in the server on a regular basis. There are some brilliant guys that used to play on the GoN server, it wouldn't have been hard to recruit new admins if they wanted to. Shutting the server down is a cop out.

weve been practically begging for new admins in a seperate thread the existing admins dont even play regulary or AT ALL. so when its regular players that have to get voted in during the game to deal with the morons constantly teamkilling or blowing up their own base for **** and giggles why wouldnt they expect some people to swear and carry on because of the bs they have to deal with every **** day and nothing gets done.....

Yeah I've been following the other thread, it's an ongoing issue and it seems as though the official response is .. to do nothing. I can tell its been frustrating for you guys, and actually lilwilly your name came up as someone some of the guys would like to have as an admin with someone I was chatting to about this issue earlier but I wouldn't hold your breath, heh.

How can you do a decent job of being an admin if you don't even play? The answer is, you can't.

That's just laughable, I've been here 6 years now and GoN has gone from strength to strength. There does, however, seem to be an inexhaustable supply of chicken little's that cry 'death' because of, say, a server being shutdown.

I have no idea what's happening/happened to the ArmA 2 server so I suggest you direct any further questions towards Ball0 via PM or to Cas Bitton,

Also, when someone is made a mod, they also become a representative of Games On Net (part of the iiNet group didn't you know). Being a regular on a server isn't enough, do they post regularly and constructively on the forums? Would they represent the GoN brand well? Not saying that there aren't players who might fit this bill, but it's not as simple a choice as you might think.

It actually is.
An admin just has to do their job of being active on servers and enforcing the rules, they don't need to be out in the community representing GoN and spreading it's interests for the world to see/read...

3FL had the same problem; enough servers, not enough active admins to ensure that they ran properly.

So the community gets the rap across the knuckles from Ball0. The perception of what ever happened today resulted in an action that can only be viewed as extreme when compared to every other response thus far, with the likes of "live with it" to "I'm over it, comply or get added to the banlist". The lack of any transparency and compassion shown by the powers that be towards the community seems to be a significant cause of most of the confusion/frustration. Certainly a valid question to anyone here is whether they actually think GoN has a community at all. It all seems quite toxic. And from what I've been reading across multiple threads, everyone requesting a response from the admins has been polite, yet the community continues to tread on eggshells to get anything done.

The problem is that Arma is not just like any other game. Rounds of warfare take hours (not minutes), and unlike say COD or BF3, if you don't like any given server, you can always just jump to another. There are few enough Aus/NZ based Arma servers, and the GON server is one of the only ones to (almost) exclusively play Warfare. This small community, combined with the complexity of the game, and time investment in each round means that the stupid actions of a small number of players has a proportionally higher impact on the other players.

This results in griefing, complaining, and players (myself included) who just got sick of it and stayed away, leaving the bullies and the noobs to bicker amongst themselves, with the end result being the shutting down of the server. At this point, no great loss.
ALL GUTS. NO GLORY.

This is why we have admins, yeah?
