Armored Kill - First Impressions?

Unread postby Ashigaru » 12 Sep 12, 10:04 am

Hey everyone! Well I reinstalled BF3 to get in on my armoured kill action (and also because it hadn't been put back on my SSD post it dying in the bottom).

First impression, the AC-130 is a little weak to be honest. I find it's a little too vulnerable at the moment from stuff like AA, or jets or even choppers. To make the most of it, you really need all the gun positions taken and a couple of people really looking out for it on the ground too. I took it down with 2 AA missiles and a burst of the AA gun from a nicked LAV-AD. Being in it though is freaking AWESOME :D Nothing beats raining death from above. It's also hilarious sitting in a flag point when suddenly a howitzer goes off in front of you and blows up the rest of your squad.

Quad bikes make a welcome return to BF and I have to say this is the most fun I've had for the whole night. A friend and I were charging around the map, just the 2 of us, on a quad bike each jumping over ditches, craters, whatever there was to launch off. I haven't had so much fun in ages! It was also hilarious because we were able to back-cap a lot of points without the enemy realising. I can see them having a genuine use in slightly more serious games, beyond who can launch highest off the blast craters around the map.

Finally the maps. I have now played a couple of rounds on Tank superiority and it's a pretty fun game mode. Both times I played on Bandar desert, which was a bag of fun. Admittedly I got sick of the vehicle stuff and was pulling off 1KM headshots with the L96 for most of it, but spotting ALL the tanks is still super useful to my teammates.

Armoured shield is a fantastic map reminiscent of Heavy metal from BFBC2, albeit a bit more open to take advantage of the tanky nature. It's also quite a balanced map and a lot of fun can be had. The craters around the fields are particularly awesome to launch the quad bikes off, although my friend jumped over an engineer hiding with his mortar, and he exploded in front of me. Hilarity ensued. Also being chased around by little birds whilst on quads is awesome.

Death Valley is the final map I played, and the dusk setting is fantastic. It really makes flanking manoeuvres viable, and the large use of air keeps everyone on their toes. This was the map I got the LAV AD on though, and it can be fairly easy to hide and bring the pain to the air units in the game.

Overall I'm super stoked to have gotten premium for this expansion alone as it's a bag of fun and will certainly keep me entertained for many months to come :D

TBH...I thought Armoured Kill would be full of well...armour. but no, I spent more time fkg walking from flag to flag than driving a brand spanking new tank. Maps are good but we need a **** load more vehicles. Otherwise its just another friggin Caspian.

Ah yes, the pain of being stuck somewhere without a vehicle and spending ten minutes trying to get there.. OR just dropping a nade and suiciding.

The AC130 doesn't help with that either, considering that the parachute was changed from release so that you can now only just choose fast or slow descent.

This game is giving me some horrible performance issues, low FPS, jerky, never had this problem with BF3 itself or the CQ Exp.

Updated your drivers? I got the latest nvidia set and it's been running like a dream. I'll get occasional server jerkiness, but my PC has been mincing through it :)

wish I could get the ac 130 more often, after it always seems to be me capping the flag for it! :(

Been having a blast in the Ac130 except its dies way to quickly, think alot of people forget it has flares and if both gunners co-ordinate their flares it will last a hell of a lot longer.

One thing though I can't figure out where the Mobile arty spawns, can someone please tell me lol really wanna try one out.

The Mobile Artillery spawns at flags A and E on Death Valley, flags B and E on Alborz, the deployment area of Bandar and A and E on Armored Shield. The Tank Destroyers spawn at deployments.

Armored Superiority mode need a couple more vehicles, spent too much time walking. AC130 i agree needs to take a bit more of a beating. The new maps are nice, Alborz Mountains and Death Valley are the best imo.

Yep quite often there seems to be 10 people hanging around base waiting for vehicles to spawn, it's a pain. Haven't had a go at the AC130 yet, but the mobile arty is very very fun and deadly if you can get into a good location! I gather it's easy to see from the air though as you become a target pretty quickly.

It's very easy to locate the arty, the missile trails are a dead giveaway.

I'm starting to find this is impossible to play without a decent team. Having selfish or poor players in your squad is really exacerbated in the new maps. Hoping I can log some time with my mates this weekend :/

Huzzar! finally, team work is required!! We squadded (if that's how you say it) up last night and domination was maintained ;)

I feel that at least integrated squad based VOIP would be a welcome addition (for when your playing with randoms. I don't really want to hear 64 whining ppl on comms. As that would happen from what i keep seeing in the chat window. Also according to someone i am unable to kill someone with a PP2000 at some sort of distance, must be my HAXY HAX! It's a medium range PDW!

Hi guys, I jumped in last night and was keen for some fun but I hit a snag, about 10 minutes in the game suddenly turned to powerpoint. In task manager I could see my SSD getting flogged (argh, damn you lost write cycles) and my RAM was fully topped out at 100% utilisation of 16gb. Using the process monitor the biggest culprit (IE) was using about 124mb, but I couldn't see any process using anywhere near what it said was happening.

Anyway, the wife distracted me with jobs to do and I never made it back to work it out. I'll try again tonight but just curious if anyone has heard about any memory leaks or anything like that? It had to be a memory leak, after closing BF3AK my RAM continued to sit at 100% and I couldn't see anything using that much memory. After a reboot this morning it settled down to about 16%, but alas I am at work now and cannot play to reproduce the issue.

back to the game, I'm excited to get in and check things out - I'd like to get some more air time in the choppers as I usually leave those for more experienced players - the quad bikes sound like awesome fun though!
