GoN hit by spam bots

Nice way to start the day... login to GoN and find the forums full of spam. Seems GoN needs to improve its spam bot prevention system. Maybe have an hourly post limit (like 20 or so) and only allow a new account to make one new topic per day. Also probably limit new accounts to 10 posts per day for the first week.

Although there may be other methods that are more effective against spam bots that i'm not aware of.

Tell me about it, I have been banning them left right and centre as well as removing posts as quickly as I can! But so far today over 350+ posts, Not to mention the 100+ yesterday, and same the day before

But understand, I am doing what I can captain

Edit: Guys, I think I have all of the posts now...However if I have missed any can you either PM directly, or use the report post button to highlight the Spam.

Yeah there's been a few around now. Will have to talk to Cas about what we can do to prevent them. Could be a common IP range, or maybe some kind of trickier captcha for new accounts.

There was a page worth, which I think is 50 topics. Couldn't really be bothered checking to see if there was anymore beyond that, but it was a mess.

Is it possible to make the accept button into a flash button on the registration page which would then make it impossible for a bot to click it? I don't know how they operate though :B

I was being sarcastic, don't mind me As I said earlier, we had well over 2-300+ posts to deal with and between us all I think they have now been dealt with.

Was up until 5am following the bots around reporting anything and everything I could find checking the index page for new signups and then following them around and reporting them and when they posted in the BF section I was able to remove them, damn bots.
