The store came out long after release though, didn't it?

I'm not a big TF2 player, I have a bit of a burst every now and then. To be honest I didn't realise there was that much stuff to buy!

Again, if you read the thread no one is doing it all in one go. They are spending these amounts over 2 years.

Are you saying you cannot afford $10-20 per week to spend on something that is not a necessity?

I probably could afford it most of the time, but there are significantly better things I could waste money on.

And, of course, I would rather not waste money at all. Same reason I don't want Foxtel.

I don't understand the point of paying for TF2 items that are purely cosmetic, just seems like pointless e-penis displays to me, I guess I'm in the minority on that. I'm also one of those people who thinks idling goes against the spirit of the game and have never participated in it, so at least I have my halo...

Everyone got their halo, whether they idled or not so no e-penis bragging of how you got a halo for you!

My rough calculation (haven't double checked) comes to just under $69. Not too bad for 244 hours of play so far.

Unlike many microtransaction based games, I enjoy TF2 so much that I honestly don't mind spending a few dollars here and there, since I figure I've gotten so much from the game so far. Much more than I would have gotten from your average $70 retail game.

Yeah, I realised that just as I posted it. I checked and the Mann Co. Store was online from September 30th 2010. That's less than 2 years ago. I was honestly surprised about that as it felt it was much longer ago than that. It seems like I've been buying stuff forever!

So yeah $720 spent over 2 years, or $360 per year. Meh, if I wasn't spending time and money on TF2 I'd be doing the same with some other pointless hobby. But yeah, time to give the credit card a bit of a break ;)

After some digging around I found the thread where we discussed the implementation of the Mann Store. Looking back I didn't make any comments about resolving never to buy any stuff of the Mann Store, hehe.

$137.5. I honestly had no idea how high it would be, but I've always been a bit careless with money when it comes to shrapnel or similar amounts. Those $2.50 purchases add up!

If someone wants to spend thousands of dollars in microtransactions, I can understand that. Paying to consume media, ala Foxtel as someone mentioned, paying to customize something trivial or paying to consume something tangible is all the same to me. I'll never pay $2.50 for the chance to win an unusual hat, pokies payout or anything though - I try to always use logic in my approach and theres no way around the crazy logic there!

Now, if I analysed how much I've spent on only slightly interesting games during Steam sales - that would be much more painful!

Ha.. I just counted my pink paint total (I paid metal for some!): $29.85

As for TF2... I think I bought it for $5 on sale once, I joined steam in Oct 2010 so I don't have a halo :( Boo... I want one!

And as for hats: $112.40
Keys around $50
Other paints: $18.50

Okay so ... *adds up* that's still too much for me for a game!! However it's only a teeny dent in my wallet compared to my shoe collection, handbags, and designer sunglasses ^.^

Well I think it is worth it. I've spent money on other games, up to $100 each time that have been total ****. Some you play for a little while and some you never play at all because you believed the hype that "such and such" was going to be AWEsome but wasn't.

But Valve makes games that people play for years upon years. And because those games don't rely on servers controlled by a master server that gets shut down after a few years to make you buy version 23 of their new game you can still play it years and years later. In fact you can play some of those game for free... if you can control your urges. ;)

^^ Exactly.

And you know what? Spending money on this game is a choice by the player and is not forced by Valve in any way. This thread has shown that people enjoy this game whether they spend $0, $10, $100, $1000 or...$3000... ;)

It's funny but I would never play subscription based games (like WoW, The Old Republic), the same way people can't see the merit of paying for TF2 items. I much prefer having the freedom and choice to spend my money and find being forced pay in order to continue playing a game galling.
