Because someone who has only driven auto's does not know how to use the clutch which is the main thing to learn when driving a manual. They'd just be a danger on the road... well more then they already are as auto drivers

Seriously though, if they do get it moving then they will stall the car somewhere down the road, probably at a very inconvinient and dangerous time.

If they can't drive a manual how are they going to get it moving?

EDIT:

It would stall as they try to take off.

EDIT EDIT:

And also, you are supposed to leave enough room to be able to come to a complete stop without collision should something happen infront of you.

EDIT EDIT EDIT:
And if you need a license to tell you that you are not capable of driving a manual without any prior knowledge of driving a manual, you shouldn't be operating any vehicle to begin with. :P

My understanding was that in NSW you could immediately drive a manual vehicle unsupervised once you have been on your P1 for a year and you pass your hazard perception test, and have your P2's (green P's)..

I could be wrong though, I haven't had to worry about any of that nonsense for a long time :D

Some learners don't have access to manual cars. Lessons are fairly expensive so they end up only driving automatics. I'd rather it this way to be honest :)

Yes, but if they do figure out how to get moving (which is what I said) it will be dangerous for everyone. I don't understand what your problem with this rule is anyway, if you can't drive a manual anyway why worry about being banned from it? It's a safety thing.

If they can get moving then they can operate a manual well enough not to stall it.

Out of curiosity, do you drive Fryzie?

You've either never driven a manual, or were an exceptionally quick learner.

EDIT: Damn your ninja edit. Should also say that the sensitivity of the clutch would be a major factor as well, when my clutch got replaced I stalled my car for the first time in months because I wasn't used to the new sensitivity.

Yes, I have 2 licences, a civilian manual and a military light vehicle licence.

Just for the record. Learnt in an auto. Have been driving manuals for longer then I can remember. I don't really remember being a hazard, or even coming close to being dangerous to other drivers.

Ok, we all need to stop editing :P

Last edit: The friction point is different for all cars. Many of my cars have had race clutches in them and I doubt an average soccer mum could drive it. Should there be individual manual car licensing as well?

If you can drive a manual you should be able to adjust to the different pressure within a few minutes, or at least I can and I don't think that I'm a particularly special case (though despite being relatively inexperienced I seem to have infinitely more patience and parking skill than most other drivers). Not the same for someone who knows little more about the clutch than it has something to do with changing gears, because they start again in the infancy stage of learning where they have to think about everything they do rather than it being instinctive and just merely adjusting to slightly different circumstances.

tl;dr
if i get my manuals, we get married finally. :P i've never bothered with learning to drive ANY car purely out of lack of confidence/relying on everyone else. i have a recreational ship masters license that allows me to operate any privately owned vessel, that;s good enough for me.. BUT NO my driver is getting sick of driving me everywhere (and i admit, i'm sick of relying on him and everyone else) so, i best do something.

People are not very social in cities it seems. When I say g'day to someone on the street all they do is jump, move to the other side of the path and hurry past. There was a guy at a bus stop I walked past today as well who tried to talk to people and everyone just looked at him like he was strange or put their head down and moved slightly away. I think I prefer towns and suburbs, the people tend to be friendlier and less worried that people who smile will stab them.
