Gaming headphones.

Unread postby xanarax » 17 Jul 12, 10:12 am

I'm looking at getting a new pair of headphones after my Logitech G35s snapped from plastic fatigue. I got an excellent run out of them, very happy with them.

I'm looking to get some new headphones, preferably with surround sound, I have a crappy on board soundcard, so the USB feature of the G35s was great. I had a look at the new razer tiamat 7.1, but at the RRP of $260 I was a bit turned off, I can afford them, but that's a hefty amount for headphones.

Should I get another set of G35s or can anyone recommend me a good set of headphones for gaming? I understand to get the most out of a decent set I might have to invest in a soundcard too.

Logitechshop.com.au have the G35's for $109 with free shipping.
The Corsair Vengence 1500 is alike the G35 but use felt instead of plether like the G35's and have an inline control instead of on the cup. They can be had from high $90 range from most retailers.

I have a pair of G35's I'm not using, thinking of chucking em on Ebay for cheap.

I bought them, very disappointed with them, I'm 90% sure they're faulty but it's going to cost me too much to ship them back and get them replaced for it to be worth it. I don't want to completely bag on them, they have fantastic sound quality, nice bass and the 'surround' is pretty good, but the thing which annoyed me with them (probably a loose wire) was a static like whining noise, granted it was pretty low and it was mainly due to the mic feedback, but if I muted my mic, which I quite often do it got twice, or three times louder becoming quite irritating to have a ringing in your ear. Contacted Corsair about it and they said that the headset is faulty and to send it back to where I bought it from. I bought them online, and the shipping to where I bought it will be ~$25 (either way, so $50 all up), I don't want to spend $50 to replace an $80 headset.

if the headset is faulty surely you'd be reimbursed for the cost to ship...

I'm hoping for less than $200, but ~$150 is probably my sweet spot. I would like surround sound much like the G35s have. I have on board sound so something USB like the G35s will probably come out better.

I contacted them, and they said they would pay shipping, I must have read their terms incorrectly.
I'm probably going to get a refund over a replacement and get the G35's. I don't want to make too much debate over them in this topic and take the attention away from the OP.

Surroundsound is touch and go with headsets, but one thing i have held onto and will back is a decent set of drivers in the headset will outmatch any 5.1/7.2 headset setup. This is why we tend to highly recommend the ATH-AD700 and the bigger bro's the ATH-A900's.

Seriously,THESE are not to be messed with when it comes to possibly the best bang for buck headphone for gaming. If $150 is your sweetspot, these go for the $149, you might find them cheaper elsewhere so keep that in mind, and if you need a microphone, pickup one of THESE for a very decent little mic to clip onto your headphones cord.

i run A900's with a zalman mic that i picked up for the price of the 900's from headphonic, am currently running onboard sound, and without a doubt the sound is amazing, i have compared against gamecom's and sennie's and dre's beats and everyone who puts the Audiotechnica's on dont want to take them off...

I've been rocking the A900 + Zalman mic combo for a while now too, goes great.

I recently picked up some new gaming headphones - I got the steelsound 5h v2.
These are like old school headphones. They used to cost like well over $150 5yrs ago.
Now they can be had for about $30.

They have a retractable mic and are really comfortable.

Great bang for buck i say!
