Server 15 Forcing HTML MOTD?

Unread postby PolarBehr » 11 Jul 12, 8:35 pm

Simple question: Why?

It's screwing with alt+tab and windowing.

It's been great being able to have them off, why now force them on on this specific server?

Simple answer: It helps keep the servers you play on running.

Care to explain a little further?

I thought it was pretty clear - before the force to enable html motd, alt+tab and windowing in win7 worked fine. Now for some reason on server 15 with forced motd it requires a ctrl+alt+del task manager usage to get back to desktop.

The only thing thats different is that now there are enforced html motd.

Fix plz?

At a glance I can see a heap of servers that rarely get used, perhaps instead of forcing people to listen to spammy advertisements upon logging into the 1 server they actually play on, perhaps save costs by taking those less played servers down?

Seems like a less intrusive method, but hey, alienate players on the one or 2 servers that actually get played on to any degree, I'm sure they will rush out to buy that new telstra phone plan or hot mazda mx3 in droves, which will in turn keep your D2 NoSniper servers running....

*sigh*

Is it really that hard to click ok at the MOTD? As soon as you get to the select team screen it stops? If you do it fast enough the adds don't even load/play.

So how are we alienating players? Sure it seems you have an issue but you haven't even given me an hour to look into it to see if it can be resolved.

I find it rather sad that you seem so against something that is only helping us maintain servers. Suppose some people are just ungrateful....

With the decline in playerbase that the aging cs:s game is seeing lately, and with the inevitable migration to cs:go when its released, I would have thought that NOT forcing ads, and there is force involved, there is an option to turn these motd off in the cs:s game panel options, but you are FORCING them to remain on to play, would be less detrimental to the players of these servers.

If you want to put forced ads perhaps a server that doesn't get so much play? Your renting the ad space after all, or is it based solely off of views? If it's based off of views, then I understand why you put it on the most played server and not on any others.

Give us the option to choose whether or not to be spammed by ads.
We enjoy our freedom to choose where to play, don't make us regret our choice.

"With the decline in playerbase that the aging cs:s game is seeing lately,"

What? the queues to get into rotation is like 15mins+ And we wont be fully into GO until in 2 years time. There are people who still play the original TeamFortress.

And the adds? Well unless you want to pay for the servers to be up deal with it.

"Give us the option to choose whether or not to be spammed by ads." its called playing on another server without adds.

The reason i bothered to reply is that i know it costs quite a bit, even just, for pc game server to operate.

Well said Microsoft. I have not found these ads to impact me at all really. I often just click OK asap and then dont even need to watch the ads anyway.

As microsoft said, it takes a lot of effort and money to build a great gaming community. I would much prefer to have more staff around, gaming servers that are updated faster than any other community, better server speeds, better variety and amount of servers and a better gaming experience and then in return put up with some ads here and there.

To me its just like you tube - some people put in hours and hours of work to come up with a great video that people can enjoy - they are providing a service to you for free. So its understandable that sometimes they may put ads on their videos to help fund this service that they are providing to you. Sure not everyone is doing it, but if it meant loosing your favourite you tube channel or loosing your favourite GON server, i would definitely prefer to keep those short ads on.

I see nothing wrong with this move at all.
However if there are some issues such as your ctrl+alt+delete issue and you believe it is related, then thats at least something constructive to raise with the admins. Sounds like Cozi is going to take a look at that one for you, so see if he can work out what is happening there.

Yeah the issue with ctrl+alt+delete or windowing started with the update that forced enabling of HTML MOTD's. It seems they have gone over the coding, and the game has been working properly the last few times I went in.

Cheers for the fix.

I still would prefer to have the option to disable html motd's.
