Cas, if server files were released, what are the chances of GoN opening a server up?

If it's somewhat manageable on a large scale, absolutely!

I'd love to get a server up, hopefully the software isn't too horribly broken or needs constant reboots.

What else do i have to do to make it work? I have followed the instructions in the readme and when i try to start it a black screen appears then it returns to the desktop.

Is it still able to be played online or have i missed the boat?

it was actually pretty stable when I was playing before, still a bit of lag in some places, but an amazing job!

The only real place I've seen lag is when somebody jumps on your vehicle to ride, they end up lagging way behind. Looks sorta funny but yeah that's where the lag is noticeable.

Gah. I didn't buy it when I saw it on sale because it doesn't have multiplayer. Should have bought it, it was only ~$4. *kicks himself*
