I'm dealing with the hilarious bug where I get stuck on "Waiting to create a character..." for 5 minutes when trying to join a server, then it finally switches to "Loading..." and hangs there indefinitely. Every server I've tried so far.

I'm now trying to reinstall both Arma 2, OA and Day Z in an effort to fix it.

I love that. Spawn in, have absolutely -no- gear - try to go towards a spot, get killed by a sniper. What in gods name does he gain for killing me?

Tonight I had a few issues where I would get stuck on the loading screen, usually on the same servers. If I killed the game and tried a new server it was fine though.

All this talk of the dangers of NW airfield is starting to frighten me. I've just started my way north to my hidey hole, was thinking about visiting NW Airfield to upgrade my guns and score a compass... I think I'll just give it a wide berth now.

Don't bother reinstalling, it's not you. Hanging on loading happens on server that either haven't been restarted in ages or aren't fully started up for some reason, if you play late at night then more than 50% of US servers will do that, often joining anything with under 20 people is pointless because you'll have to try 30 servers before you find one that works and doesn't have a 180ms ping limit.

Hidden: show
So, last night, I log on to play some DayZ with a couple of friends.
We meet up at Stary Sobor and do some blood packing, shoot some zombies, and decide to head to the NWAF.
I mark where all the important buildings are, we start walking.
Raid the SW barracks, and I find a M4A3. Score!
This thing has a light, and it's a night server, so I turn it on. One of my friends has a glock, he turns the light on that on.
We run across to the hangers, check those. Nothing much. Check the Fire Station, nothing much...but there is a zombie.
We shoot him. With an AK.
Suddenly, there's more zombies. We hold them off, but the last couple of zombies are all in one corner. One of my friends tries to shoot over the other friend's shoulder, but he moves at the last moment.
Shotgun blast to my friend's back.
We grab all his stuff, and start moving towards Kamenka, which is where he says he's respawned. We agree to meet in Zeleno.
Our current server is having problems, so we switch to a day server.
We move out of the airfield with no problems, but as we're moving around Vybor, we hear automatic fire.
Eating dirt, we start crawling south. Slowly, oh so slowly.
Suddenly, a Makarov shot sings out across the silence.
Hydrixs has died.
What the hell was that? Suddenly my friend isn't responding, isn't covering my back. I switch to Full Auto and look around. Nothing.
Another Makarov shot.
Brunius has died.

Just thought I'd add to the NWAF fun :)

Strangely enough, reinstalling Arma2, OA and Day Z seemed to work and I was finally able to join the Games.on.net servers.

With the OA beta patch, is that necessary as well? I installed it, but every time I run the separate beta patch shortcut from the OA directory I get errors about files missing, and I get instantly kicked from Day Z servers I join with a message about a deleted chernarus file.

Launching the game using the Six Updater Suite works fine though.

thats cos the beta patch uses its own exe and you need to inlcude -mod @dayz to the commandl ine for it

also geting stuck on joining is usualy a server issue, (either dayz database) or the server you joining needs a restart which is required several times a day

I added "-mod=@dayz" (without quotes) to the shortcut target, is that what you mean?

At any rate, I was able to join the GON servers and go on adventures.

I found my first gun! After running through the forest for 15 minutes, then crawling on my belly into a barn, I found some farmer's scoped hunting rifle and about 10 rounds. It's hard to describe the elation I felt once I was to finally be able to defend myself.

I went to some nearby deer stands and killed the military zombies around them, hoping to find more ammo for my rifle. Unfortunately I found every type of ammo EXCEPT the bullets for my farmer's rifle. AK mags, machine gun belts, pistol mags of every sort - but no rifle rounds. I looted about 3 different deer stands, and about 5 zombies nearby but only ever found useless ammo.

Eventually I ran out of bullets and died trying to raid a town.

Despite all the many, many bugs afflicting Day Z, the sense of satisfaction when you accomplish something is awesome.

Might be a CZ by the sounds of it Matt? I saw my first M24 last night, but there was an AKM in the same hanger and I decided I'd rather the AKM over the M24 (in hind sight it made SFA difference since I died ten minutes later anyway).

I'd love a sniper rifle if I was travelling with someone with an assault rifle, but scoped weapons are hard to use close range if you're being swarmed by zombies.

I'll start my new life in Cherno no doubt, and try to get myself kitted up again and head north, again. Without a doubt the Alice Pack is the best thing I've picked up so far, SO MUCH SPACE!@

The thing I love about ARMA is that when I'm playing I feel completely absorbed in the game, and I don't normally experience that with video games.

Yeah it was a CZ. I didn't have any problems using it, although all the zombies I killed were off in the distance.

After I died, I respawned near Kamenka at night and managed to creep into town to score a 1911 and two mags. I crawled back to the same barn where I found the CZ previously and nabbed myself an Enfield rifle, so I'm pretty good to go now. I logged out inside the barn so hopefully when I log back in tonight some more gear has spawned.

I love the 1911, great gun IRL and in game! I haven't picked up an Enfield yet actually :(

I found that the NZ Regular servers have many more friendly players than the Australian servers, no idea why >.<
