Forum or comments for news posts?

Unread postby Otto-matic » 5 Jul 12, 1:44 pm

Splitting this off from the general new site layout thread to get some idea of people's feelings

It would appear the decision has been made to limit all discourse on news items to the comments section below the news item and the forum sections for these have been deleted. In my opinion I preferred the old system, even if editorials and guides ended up as news, and from the other thread it would appear many share this opinion. I think the current comments option limits meaningful discussion on the topic and the current single page for all comments is not that great either.

So, vote away and we can see what the community would prefer.

PS If the forum option does come back, call it 'Article Discussion' or something :D

Old style of course, how are we supposed to argue discuss things in the paltry comments section we have at the moment?

I notice some other news sites use the "comment" option then a forum (engadget comes to mind), but I much prefer a forum.
The forum for discussing news can work quite well (if not better, imo),

Old style. Like how the news and forum were linked.

PS is it just me or is this forum now rather laggy?

Much prefer the old style. I find myself just scrolling through the new comments section without reading anything.

Old style, was much more interesting to see other (fleshed out) opinions on news pieces/editorials.

Truth be told, it was one of the main things that kept me coming back here - the discussions.

Definitely old style.
I hate the current comment section on the news articles.
I liked having the forum discussion feel to the news articles.

Anon. E. Moose: I don't like the new comment thing for news articles
Jez: yes
Jez: I'm arguing with fireslide now about how the new comments are ****.
Anon. E. Moose: It's counter productive imo
Anon. E. Moose: discussion is near impossible now
Jez: yeah
Anon. E. Moose: IT'S GON SUPPRESSING THE LITTLE GUY AGAIN
Anon. E. Moose: STOPING US FROM VOICING OUR OPINIONS
Anon. E. Moose: BY GIVING US **** AVENUES TO VOICE THEM
Jez: XD

I would much rather the old style, the new format makes discussion hard.

Prefer old simply because it's more functional.

Old style. More community involvement, a lot easier to discuss news items amongst fellow GON'ers. This new system brings nothing to the table.
