Why aren't you guys building your own engines?! Seriously that's one of the best parts.

Bah! V8's are dead now. I love how hard Holden/Ford try to make V8 their flagship when the I6 Turbo is such a better motor haha!

Great cars none the less.

New car coming this weekend.

Black 4 door r32 skyline, awwww shieet.

Really it depends what you want out of an engine, and what you want out of your car.

mm the supercharged 5l goes pretty well, though the f6 still outperforms it.

[Generic Skyline fanboy insult] ;)

At the moment I'm restoring my car to its ...former glory in appearence, my only worry is, is it worth it investing time into a 20 year old car that almost no one has heard about? or just clean it up, use it then buy a new one and be in $10k debt for a year. Seems a lot of cars I like (Skyline, WRX Imprezza) etc, are all overpriced and gradually getting old now. No one sells them for a good price despite being everywhere :(

I wouldnt mind doing mine up, but being a Paseo, parts aren't easy to find, the engine is very low powered and to drop a celica engine in (the only compatible one) would cost quite a bit and even then unsure its worth it.

Research. Then research some more.

What type of car do you want? A race car, Daily driver, Drift pig, Rally, Bush basher, Dune monkey, Hill climber, etc. What style of car do you like? Ute, coupe, convertable, hot hatch, jacked up, lo rider, etc. What's your budget? Whatever it is, triple it.

Your first aim has to be working out what you want most, then you can work out how to get as close as you want.

My example, I wanted a classic (mk1) mini cooper with a modern engine for hill climbs and daily driving. I sourced my options out, got a decent condition car (1968 mini) then worked out which engine would be best for me. I had to toss up between 4 different ones (G13 + T, 4E-FTE, B16, K20) and ended up going with the one that required the least screwing around with engine placement (given how freaking small the engine bay was). Mines stuck at about 80% done due to the simple fact I had a kid, but I've also run out of money so it'll take me a while longer :P.

Simply working on an engine is good fun, my previous car was a 97 Pulsar SSS with SR20DE in it. I did as much as I could to get the N/A love flowing but wished I'd just gone turbo :P.

It's fun, rewarding, but if you want a car that you can just drive without worrying about breaking down, don't bother -_-.

You have any particular likes?

I assume this is for your Legnum? If so just keep in mind those engines are a bit rarer, and parts and info could be harder to source.

But it all depends on what you are going to do, there is information aplenty out there and kits around. You can rebuild your engine every which way, so some engine builds can be very in-depth (such as rebuilding it for track use), while others can be relatively easy (such as a basic rebuild).

Personally I'd start but doing a bit of research into what type of rebuild you want. Then just doing a bit of investigating on those particular things. Even having a chat to a mechanic on rebuilding your engine could hold some insight, he could show you the right direction to take. Building an engine can be a huge task, so prepare for a lot of reading :P

What are you planning to build?

EDIT: Dodger summed it up nicely. It's super rewarding, but quite indepth.

Not sure if you were talking to me but: BC V1 Coilovers, Whiteline 20mm rear swaybar, 3" turbo-back with 3 14" resonators (it's still too loud though). The free-flowing exhaust dragged boost from 11psi (stock for the 54C variant of the SR20DET) up to 14-15psi. These mods alone in the baby zilla are more than enough for street/occasional hills use. :)

I don't have a Lugnum dude - had to google that to see what it even was. :P I'm in the process of selling my car at the moment, and I'm very open minded with a new car. I'd prolly want something small, but not ghey, with a 4cyl turbo engine.... that about as far as I got. The 'buy a cheap care off ebay/quokka and stick a phat engine in it' does sound appealing though :)
