I love stuff like this nd would really like to read more of this particular guys opinions, nice to see your column this week is on fps!

Back when I really got stuck into BF2 I swallowed my pride and created a thread (on another forum) Asking for tips from the really good players. Their advice on things like 'positional power play' (camping)' aiming, running and map awareness (along witth that innate ability to understand what other players will do in any given situation) helped propel my game quickly upwards. And yeah, every match comes with its own debrief, as does getting smashed by another player.

Heck, even before that when I was madly into Enemy Territory I was watching vids that had me strafing and jumping madly while keeping my cursor on the same brick in a wall.

I think your articles are my favourite on the site Alex, nice work :)

CTF is more common in competitive COD on console. COD on consoles actually switches between CTF/S&D in leagues like MLG. It's a shame it's never been tried on PC.

Competitive 5v5 CTF is actually a good challenge, but normally CTF should be renamed Camp the Flag.

Thing is even competitive S&D is just because people are still in the old mentality of CS. There needs to be a bit more variety/innovation in competitive FPS gaming IMO.

Can we not travel down that rabbit hole? Of course PC would win it, and it would be a really stupid idea to make (another) game that did it. But where everyone else is using a controller what does it matter that mouse and keys would dominate?

Console pro players are phenomenally talented.. Halo has some of the most amazing twiddle stick players ever, can be either really frustrating or jaw-dropping to watch... pulling off jumping headshots and all sorts of madness.

I vaguely remember that this was tried during development of a cross-platform shooter some time in the past few years, and they found that PC players dominated console players using thumbsticks so much that it wasn't fun.

EDIT: Pretty sure this is the same story:
