Two LulzSec Members Plead Guilty in British Court

Unread postby News Portal » 26 Jun 12, 9:44 am

Two members of the formerly prominent hacking group 'LulzSec' have pleaded guilty in court in the UK to charges of carrying out DDOS attacks on behalf of the group. 19-year-old Ryan and 18-year-old Jake denied allegations that they had "unlawfully obtained confidential computer data" through sources such as Pirate Bay or from LulzSec's own website. LulzSec caused havoc on the gaming internet in the middle of last year when they attacked the PlayStation Network, Nintendo, Bethesda, Mojang, Sega, and Battlefield Heroes, to name a few.

These guys may be getting 6 months in prison (time served) for conspiracy to commit virtual crimes by DDosing websites running on crappy servers with less security.

Seems pretty reasonable to me, if not a little lax.

It's about time script kiddies started getting nailed for being online hooligans - being a persistent public nuisance can attract jail time, why should doing it online be any different?

It was actually pretty interesting how they took them down. One of the members was a 35yr old (around that age) guy with kids. Once they got him they used that to their advantage and got the rest of the team.

Not really.

DDoS attack is nothing more than a digital protest akin to picketing outside a place of business because they did something or other. There is no difference and it pathetic that the ignorant masses and prosecutors treat it any differently.

Actually, LulzSec didn't really protest anything, and they didn't really DDOS anything either. They just caused mayhem for fun and exploited flaws in systems that others used to steal private information. They may have had 'some' slight nobility in their actions, in exposing the flaws, but they chose the most malicious way possible to present it.

This wasn't a protest, Pinothy. It was a rampage. It had a lot more in common with the London riots than the Occupy movement.

DDoS attack - prevents anyone from accessing the site.

Picketing - does not prevent people from entering a business. Unless you are forcibly blocking customers from entering, in which case you'd be arrested.

Added to which, while protesting is generally accepted, if it goes on for too long, people get told to move on or get charged with trespassing or being a public nuisance.

Seems like a pretty clear difference to me.
