E3 2012: Black Ops 2 Examined

Unread postby News Portal » 25 Jun 12, 6:00 pm

[app=8801]Black Ops 2[/app] may have been one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry's long history of poorly-kept secrets, but Treyarch still surprised everyone when they dropped the near-future, drone warfare bomb. Jacob Saylor went in for a closer look at this year's E3.

Loving the fact they have moved away from modern combat.

I don't recall Treyarch ever doing "Modern Combat" along the lines of Modern Warfare.

Infinity Ward did Modern Warfare 1, 2 and 3 and Call of Duty 1 and 2.

Treyarch did Call of Duty 3 (WW2), World at War (WW2) , Black ops (Vietnam?) and now Black Op's 2 (Future.)

One thing that pokes me in the eyes though is the HORRIBLE textures and models, going to give it a miss like Modern Warfare 3 and Black ops unless they push the PC a little in the graphics department.

Always the same with Treyarch releases.
2 > 4 > 6 there was improvement since IW were a good studio. The 3 > 5 > 7 > 8 > 9 have and are going to follow the same bland textures and bad performance that Treyarch excel at.

They even ruined Zombies in BO with the lack of decent weapons and the performance dive the game took, I might get it if I find a $5-10 key just to see how they've ruined another installment of the game.

I dunno, IW lost the plot completely with MW2 and MW3 and there sodding IWnet ****.

Give me bland boring textures and dedicated servers any day. The performance issues are engine related and have been there since CoD 1. Never been fixed.

I easily got into COD2 quite heavily earlier this year. After all the time since its release it hasn't gotten any less fun and overall it is still my favourite COD game. I am not overly looking forward to this game however if the experience is different enough I may consider getting the game (I refer to having multiple objectives and a small bit of RPG elements).

They were forced into it by Activision IIRC and only MW2 counts, Treyarch did the MW3 failure.

Engine that Treyarch use and never upgrade yes, the actual IW engine which was used and upgraded for 1, 2, MW and MW2 was great.
The issue with dedicated servers is that they even ruined that! There's still lag and to top it off they only allow one provider who is an absolute failure to host it which both meant **** servers and price fixing. The servers performed worse than MW2 even with a **** host more than half the time.

CoD4 and MW2 are the last two games that had decent rego and weren't ruined by Treyarch with their **** textures, terrible engine and bad optimisation. I still don't know why Treyarch always got the high profile voice over cast in their games, maybe it was to distract from the fact the game was even worse without them.

Ugh, Treyarch did MW3 for the Wii, the other consoles was all done by Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games and Raven Software. Wiki is thy friend.

Actually the improvement's to the engine are highly noticeable going from cod4 to WaW, IW made the engine so it make sense that they would lead any improvements to the core IW enging, with Treyarch to add enhancements to it, shadows an sound is one i would attribute to treyarch.

TBH, treyarch are the innovators and IW were the inventors, now the IW is no more, it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

So it says that they didn't have a hand in the textures?

Following W@W to Black Ops, they might have 'improved the lighting' but it doesn't change the fact that it didn't look any better and it performed worse.

I am more interested in where they are going with the series and how long people will pay top dollar for the same garbage each year along with the Elite 'service'.
Maybe in 2 years time they will get a studio to make an engine and get some people who can make textures that involve more than brown.

Good find there steve, interesting video. IW always seemed to have pumped out better stories than Treyarch. That being said, Treyarch has always brought something new to the game, whether it be good or bad...

I'm sorry man, but did you just mention the word "stories" in a hardcore multiplayer fps game?
