All The Deus Ex Games On Sale for 75% Off

Unread postby News Portal » 25 Jun 12, 10:11 am

Steam is great for (among many things) picking up the odd game on the cheap, and their latest sale is no exception. Until 3AM (Sydney time) on Tuesday, you can grab the entire Deus Ex series for under $US15. It's 75% off the whole range of games, as a bundle or individually, which means you can get them all, including both the Best Game Ever Made that is the original Deus Ex and the relatively new Human Revolution and all its DLC for less than $US15, when usually just DXHR alone is $35. It's a great deal, that's all I'm saying.

The hate is because of these top ripoffs for their standard prices (for Australia)

However, the occasional deal like this is nothing to complain about!

Steam don't set the prices, publishers do. Steam don't charge aussies through the nose for valve games. I'm getting sick of these uneducated arguments. It's like walking into EB and abusing the sale staff for their prices..sure you might feel better but it doesn't change jack ****.

Someone who hasn't got Deus Ex already is missing out and if they aren't willing to try the old games then they definitely need to check out Human Revolution.

I wasn't trying to make an argument that it was Valves fault. Just saying that at first glance it may seem we're being ripped off by Steam and that's as far as some people go in deciding to hate it.

I have never played them & have been convinced from a mate to do it. The first game is his favourite game of all time lol. Surely cant go wrong for $15. I will be starting the first game when I get some time :)

But Valve do control the store. That means (like every other retailer) they have the power to not charge the RRP, and currently they're not using that power because it would detract from their sales strategy. If they say to publishers "No you can't sell for that in our store" what are non-EA publishers gonna do? Sell their games through GAME? Valve have substantial negotiating power and they're not using it in our favour.

And since they get a percentage cut of every game sold, they also receive a benefit from the higher price.

Valve are not innocent.

But Valve have no control over what the publishers sell the game to them for. I don't know how it works, but I'm assuming that like in a normal retail setting, Valve would buy the price at X, and sell at Y. If it's anything like the games retail that i'm familiar with, the difference between X and Y is marginal to say the least. Steam is a service, and to keep that service viable for Valve it has to make money. I've said this before but a normal new release game will come in at cost to the retailer at around $75 to $85 (in Australia).

You do have a valid point with Valve's negotiating power however. Where else are people going to buy it? Normal brick and mortar retailer's PC gaming sections are pathetic. I'm hazarding a guess that maybe a pissed off distribution company who get their cut if people buy from steam....

Yeah, it's a complex series of agreements that I suspect Valve is trying to respect.

I got DE-HR last week from Harvey Norman - 80% off = $9-
And GH threw in Saints Row the Third and I'm down $25- for the two games,
and didn't have to wait hours for the games to download.
$28- for Batman Arkham City from EB. Steam ? Why bother ?
Gotta love retail disc - imo.
EB also has The Witcher 2 for the same price as Steam Au - atm.

The main reason Steam charges so much in Oz is people are willing to pay the price.

Just to reiterate...

Steam does not set the prices... PUBLISHERS do.
These sales though are likely driven by Valve as part of a prior agreement to move huge volumes of games at specific times during a title's lifespan.

By your reasoning, why would I bother to buy from EB when I can get almost any title I want for the same price, if not substantially CHEAPER and at 3AM to boot!

The issue is with Publishers with inflated pricing for AU stock in brick and mortar stores, who then apply the same pricing to DIGITAL stock as well, regardless of the fact it doesn't actually cost anything more for them to do so.
