Haha, console games are expensive, but when was the last time you bought one for $100? The average top price is closer to $80 now.

Admittedly it's been over two months since I bought a game new off the shelf and as a new Dad that won't be a continuing occurence.

In Launceston, there is no competition for EB Games so they still put up new titles for $100, although I have noticed the prices drop a lot quicker than they ever did before (to around that $80 mark). Fortunately their staff are awesome and will price match wherever they can, and given how many thousands I've pumped through there I rarely even need to ask these days.

Still, $80 is way more than the $50 it would cost on PC but there probably should be a difference there as I can resell my Xbox games but not my online PC games (obviously) or retail PC games. Once the model changes and you can't resell console games (or there's no physical media to resell) THEN I'll have a real problem if price disparity persists.

They still have a fair way to go to earn back my trust especially with their track record surrounding DRM.
DRM is like kids. The less you have, the better.

but that's been on the improve since the settlers debacle - hell i was playing AC:R and my ADSL link dropped out - I saw the lights die and thought '****, gotta do that mission all over again' but no - a message popped up letting me know that it was reverting to storing saves on my HDD until it could reestablish a connection to the master server. Perfect? no, it still required the connection to start the game (i think), but definitely better.

When Future Soldier dropped it was selling for around $58 for Xbox 360 at JB Hi-Fi, at first I was stunned that they had a decent price marked at release, rather then the $80+ most releases are selling for.

Ubisoft need to drop or change their **** DRM first. It still makes me not want to buy their stuff even if it is a fraction of the price.

Personally dont have a problem with them as long as they are EU\international versions. buying from "dodgy cdkeys.com" well...asking for trouble :)

For me, I am a bit more trusting of CJ's as they have won some actual legit awards (Winner of LLoyds TSB Enterprise Awards - Best Startup 2012 (East) for example, so they actually...exist, which are published in other areas (ie not their website).

But to each their own.

I agree also, spot on, cjs-cdkeys are the best, UK company also I believe?

Ya, British.
Re: Consoles: Yes the resale thing does have some added value for you hence the higher prices,
but more of the problem is a lack of a true digital distribution model for them. They have that option and from the E3 rumors, it will be prime time on the next gen, +\- this gen.

Its also worth pointing out before everyone screams "but we dont get any choice. we have to use XBLA\PSN"...yeah, PC gamers dont get much of a choice, its Steam...or Steam.

Origin is a peice of ****, and the only reason I have it is for BF3. If I could buy it through steam (even for a premium), I would have. Origin is terrible.
Impulse -> again that was only for Demigod...another POS.
GoG.com -> Great place but previously only old games. I havent experienced them with new products yet.

Frankly, Monopoly via Steam is a good thing IMHO, keeps everything in one place, with a common friends list. I hate having to run Steam + Origin and check if people are on which game. having it all via steam (or a neutrul "common" client) would be great. Reminds me of the old ICQ\MSN\AIM\IRC problems -> then Trillian came out and combined them all into a single list.

Was just looking on the PSN: Ubisoft has AssCreed III available to pre-order for $99.99 (for the classic version) or $149.99 (for the gold edition). This is for the digital downloads, obviously.

So much for:

Ubisoft wrote:We’ve also just announced our pricing for Assassin’s Creed III, and we really want to put a message out there.

The message appears to be "fsck you". :P

I will admit, PSN/XBLA game on demand pricing is a joke. But in fairness, those prices might be influenced heavily by Sony/Microsoft, since they are almost universally terrible. It may be something to look into for a future article.

I was originally referring to brick and mortar stores, which have the ability to break the RRP if they want to be competitive.

Just like to mention GOG is awesome. DRM free products at reasonable prices (though even there some have a premium for certain games  ). The version of The Witcher 2 though is undoubtedly the best. Amusingly this version was also very low on the pirate list. It was the DRM'd version that was pirated

I noticed that last night. Seriously who in their right mind would pay $100 for a digital copy of a game??

So since CDPROJEKT is so awesome.. why is the Witcher 2 $10 more for us in Aus than those in the states.. It's no longer published on Steam by Namco Bandai - it's published by CDPROJEKT..

I also found their 'no DRM, but oh we'll sue downloaders in court despite not being able to prove they downloaded it' phase very disingenuous.
