I don't ever remember it having massive depth of gameplay either. It was Diablo. Run dungeons, smash ****, get better loot, repeat. Oh look, I'm lvl 95 in Diablo 2, what do I do? Baal and cow runs repeatedly.

People seem to think Diablo has more depth that it has. It doesn't and it's been pretty formulaic throughout all 3 games. The difficulty in the previous games was less unless you wanted better loot to run with 'players 8' in Hell mode then things got a bit trickier but hell, you could down full rejuvenation potions constantly and outlast anything.

I swear somebody just don't get Diablo.

No Diablo's 1 and 2 didn't have epic depth & immersion, which makes Diablo 3 that much worse.
It is ultimately a hack 'n' slash lootfest.
I, sadly, did expect a little more from D3 it seems though.

Diablo 3 is only going to get better. I liken it to WoW at release/closed beta compared to now. Give it time and the game will have more things to do at the end, balance will be better, skills will be more balanced/useful. Expansions will add new functionality/characters/quests.

well they just changed drop rates this morning, so I doubt you've done too many with the new rates in place.

if you are finding act 1 too hard, go to act 2. once again, it has been changed just this morning, so you will probably find it easier than before. there is much less of a jump between act 1 and 2 now, so if act 1 is too easy, act 2 should be good.

Irritus wrote:But even so, perhaps I'm just wanting diablo to be something it's not (this is the first of the series for me), but where does it get fun or make sense to be forced into repeatedly farming content with little challenge?

possibly. I imagine a lot of people look at diablo and see nothing exciting. some people like it, some people don't. however, I don't agree with your "little challenge" statement. there will be somewhere in the game that is challenging without having to die heaps.

correct. original D2 release wasn't the best. the expansion made the game, and the subsequent patches added a lot of content. it seems like a lot of the design decisions have been made for a game that will last a long time. I don't think it will be sustainable to play at the same rate for years straight. coming back and playing again after a year break is what a lot of people do.

This is fairly true. And it is very WoW like with fighting trash and finding the odd elite...you get more "magic" items in D3 though...

I think that Blizz will react to feedback and alter the future content accordingly. WoW has gone through a lot of evolution since vanilla (both content a gameplay). Whether it has made the game more enjoyable is personal opinion but it would make sense that they do the same thing with D3.

On the note of there being more sidequests and little bits like that, remember: a lot of D# players would have gotten a free copy due to signing up to the WoW annual pass. It would make sense for it to be similar to WoW in some way.

Except you know, Diablo was first and did it before WoW did.

Can't really get any worse...

I think a few people are peed that this is Diablo 3. You would think they would have improved on the last two Diablo's but it just feels like a step back. I'm quite shocked pvp wasn't attached to this.

The good thing is that this isn't a mmo and doesn't require a subscription so you can wait a year and come back

I feel like D3 is a huge step forward personally, though it seems I may be pretty alone in thinking that. I think people might be a little jaded and nostalgic about D1 and D2. Yes they were great, but if they were released today, people would probably hate on them even more, and find something else to complain about.

I also think it's a hard genre to progress. You hack, slash, and loot. That's it really. Considering this limitation, I reckon Blizzard have done an excellent job in evolving aspects of this genre. For example, the skill system is brilliant. New skills/runes EVERY level to play with, all the way to sixty - awesome! While I missed skill trees at first, in retrospect, they were pretty stale in the sense that once you get to level ~30, you're basically going to use the same skills for the rest of leveling-life. Kudos to Blizzard for changing it up a bit.

I'm loving D3. It's rare that I spend so much time with one game. Also pvp is coming.

I'm still using the same skills I started off with at level 1 so not much progress there.

So... you've got ONE skill on your bar and no passives?

Are you still level 1?

Yes and no... the skill system is an improvement IMHO. I hated having to be permanently pigeonholed into a particular build so they either had to add a respec option like Borderlands did or they revamp things like what we currently have. I like this new system.

The always on internet requirement still irks me. I've had router problems over the past few weeks with my LAN dropping out once every day. Didn't fix this until the weekend when I made time to get all my router security settings (namely the plethora of MAC addresses) so I could set up my spare modem... but to have Diablo 3 freeze, crash, etc during this time was just ridiculous. Some form of offline mode would have been so good.

Ive wanted soooo hard to like this game (46 barb, 30-something sorc) but after about 30 minutes lately i find myself bored. Ive played d1 and d2 to death and still jump on at least twice a year to level up another character. Now dont get me wrong, i think that diablo 3 "will" be a FANTASTIC game.....in about 12 months after some patches and maybe an expac.

PS. Before anyone jumps in and says that Diablo 2 wasn't good on release and that LOD made it, well yes, yes it did. But this is 10 years later. Im not a game designer by no means, not even close. However if i was to release a sequel to a game i would make sure that it had pretty much the same content as the previous + more. If anyone could, Blizzard should right?
