GAME Australia To Close All Remaining Stores

Unread postby News Portal » 20 Jun 12, 9:59 am

You probably remember that the Australian arm of GAME stores went into administration about this time last month, with only a few select stores to remain open while alternatives and buyers were considered. Sadly, overnight saw the announcement of the decision to close all remaining 31 stores and liquidate the company. Kate Warwick, from the administrators for GAME had this to say: “This is a difficult time for employees and closing the stores was not a decision we made easily. Despite exploring available opportunities for continued trading, the ongoing trading performance and absence of viable offers for the purchase of the business has resulted in these closures."

GAME over man! GAME over!

All jokes aside, this really sucks as there's less competition in the games retail market (yay for an EB monopoly?).
DRM is like kids. The less you have, the better.

But I think the market is moving more towards online stores isn't it? Competition will still be around me thinks.

I rarely bought anything from GAME anyway, their PC range at my local store was absolutely pathetic and was just console stuff everywhere (Master Race here). As for an EB monopoly I doubt it, JB are strong competition for them and there's always GameTraders and like nit3hunt3r said online is always there to keep the pressure on everyone.

I didn't even know GAME existed until this all went down.

Says it all really.

I like going into my local EB to talk to the guys and girls about the games as most of them play the games or listen to the customers thoughts. I find this a much better way to help me find games I like and also have a good chat to friendly people. Ever tried talking ot the staff at your local JB? You can barely get the time of day from them and most of them don't know the product they just know how to sell things.

If your all about the money then have your lonely nights downloading games from the net or have them posted to you.
I'll be at my local EB having a chat and enjoying the 7 day returns if I don't like the game.

Gametrader's quality is on more of a store by store basis. The old Castle Hill store was epic but the Blacktown store is small and has little variety and a larger 'new' game section so isn't that great. They're all quite pricey as well. I miss Gametraders at Castle Hill.

Not to mention EB's price matching...

Online digital distribution is the future, brick and mortar shops will all die a slow death.
cjs-cdkeys and steam are the future.
