DayZ Patch 1.7.1 Removes Starting Gun, Adds LOS to Zombies, Breaks Things

Patch 1.7.1 for the zombie-apocalypse ArmA mod was released on the weekend, which not only removed your starting pistol, but also added new LOS-capabilities to zombies so that they are required to actually be able to see you to know you are there. As a result, it is now possible to actually hide from zombies who have spotted you, although players are reporting that this is not 100% functional. A hotfix of 1.7.1.1 was rolled out last night, which had some much-needed fixes. Click here for the full patch notes.

The LOS thing not being 100% functional probably isn't a bad thing. Gives a bit of a random nature to the zombie personalities...

That sounds interesting, what happened with prone before?


And starting without the pistol sounds good, but it's like starting gungame late in the round when everyone else is on full-auto and you have a pea-shooter.

Yeah I think no makarov to start with is stupid. You now have no gun whilst I have a M4SD and NVGs. People with torches usually seem to be stupid enough to turn them on too... make them easier to find.

The problem is it's actually a really easy game if you know how to deal with zombies... he's trying to make it harder but I think this idea is just stupid.

I am a little upset, as I got it for the first time last night and my experiences have not been good.

I can not get anywhere, 10 zombies running at me. I have only put in about 35 minutes, but wouldnt maybe starting with a knife or something?? Or is there no melee?

There are no melee weapons yet but it seems like an obvious thing to add.

When I first started I was almost instantly dying every time but once I figured out that 1. Never run near buildings and 2. It's not a game about shooting zombies but rather about avoiding zombies I was able to survive.

Personally I think the game might get easier now, if I am able to actually run into a building, close the door and hide and the zombies would eventually forget about me that would be much easier then starting with a pistol honestly. Also on a big server it is pretty common that you die a few times in a row to "the beach wars" as noobs attack each other, the geared players tend to spend most of their time in the bigger cities and military areas from my experience.

Overall these sound like huge improvements, now for some sort of decent grouping system that allows you to easily play with friends and we are almost set.

I read somewhere it was going to go stand alone, but now I cant find it. Is this true?

I don't know if it's even possible to make it standalone because it comes as a patch, too. But either way, I guess this mod is a really good and big one.
