Bek wrote:Doesn't that depend on the player? I could role play as a zombie protector, killing any player I see who attacks zombies and never killing them myself. I could role play as a hoarder who collects gear and stashes it all in the one place. Or simply a bandit. It's not character development like play for a few hours and level up some stats, it's role play and be who you want.Freeborne wrote:There is no character development in DayZ.
Does it really though?Drjft wrote:Role Playing means, by default, filling the role of a structure and existing within those defined rules.
I wouldn't think so. In Zelda you're assuming a role, in DayZ you're making the role yourself. How you choose to project your role to other players (if at all) is totally up to you. Just because it's optional doesn't meant the game has No roleplaying.Drjft wrote:You're Link, tasked with saving Zelda, therefor you're Link. DayZ has no pre-defined roles. It's not an RPG.

DarkMellie wrote:The issue here is Drjft is talking about RPG as a game genre, in which he's correct.
You are, in the absence of a defined character and character role, allowed to imbue your game time with any motivation you wish. In that sense you're roleplaying, but DayZ is most definitely not (yet) an RPG.
EDIT - snap

Arma II is/can be roll played if people are so inclined, so it can be classed as an RPG.
there are quite a few people on servers who role play while playing, not my idea of fun, but good luck to them.

Even if you loosely define the RPG genre you come up with statistics, levelling, varied weapon stats, branching storylines and etcetera.
You're talking about roleplaying, and as we've already thrashed out over the last page, that is correct. You can choose to roleplay your experience in DayZ, but that does not make it part of the RPG genre.
If we accept your definition then the CoD series is an RPG as I take on the role of a soldier... hell, Mario Kart is also an RPG... in fact, every game ever made is an RPG.
