Borderlands 2: We Play Two Hours of Co-Op

Unread postby News Portal » 13 Jun 12, 3:18 pm

Recently we sent two of Australia’s sexiest games journalists – Dan Staines and Daniel Wilks (collectively: Dans Central) – to 2K Australia’s swank Pyrmont offices to check out an early preview build of Gearbox’s much-anticipated RPG/FPS loot-em-up, [app=8533]Borderlands 2[/app]. After getting lost several times on the way there and almost getting run over by a bus on the way back, here’s what they returned with...

The skill trees sound a bit underwhelming again, but everything else you've detailed sounds a bit like the first, but bigger and better. Can't wait for this game :D

I kind of liked the first one but it was a little dull. I mean even with just two mates the enemy HP was already over the top, I'd rather deal with a tonne of extra enemies than have to sink to full clips into a guy to take him down.

I eventually gave up on the game because one of my mates insisted on spending 15 minutes at every vending machine, seemingly checking EVERY spec of every weapon with what he had.

There was plenty to love about it but bottom line was the killing stuff part of the game just wasn't enjoyable. Either the enemies needed to die more quickly by gun or we needed waaaay more active abilities.

I had the exact same problem, got very boring when it took more ammo than i had to kill some enemies.

Then you were doing it wrong.

I went through the whole game as mordecai, using only pistol and sniper, and I had plenty of ammo.

You need to treat borderlands as Diablo, and farm the **** out of everything to get gear, I was constantly upgrading my guns, would do chest runs and find the most efficient route for the chest runs. You can't just use the one gun the whole way through such as other FPS's lately.

Ditto. If you carefully choose guns and use them effectively there's no way the enemies are as tough to take down as suggested.

I love that it was hardish work fighting some of them, anyway - made firefights really interesting where you'd have 1-2 tank enemies and then a bunch of weak to medium strength guys running around (like those crazed midgets).

I can't wait for the sequel.

well in that case my mates were dealing nowhere near the dps they should have been, because I was playing Lilith using a phoenix build with big fire damage multipliers on my weapons (which I did constantly upgrade) and it still took ages to drop bad guys.

If you were running out of ammo, install a ammo regenerating mod. My Mordecai wielding a Chimera pistol with ammo replenishing mod was unstoppable.

I liked the first one because it was gifted to me on steam so it wasn't a problem when we soon got bored and stopped playing.

Were you playing alone? I played through with 3 friends and we were constantly out of ammo unless I had my aoe regenerating ammo mod active, in multi player the enemy HP goes up dramatically. Playing as the soldier I also found myself struggling even with the mod, I also spent half the game trying to find a decent HMG because the itemization was **** and they never fixed it, also shotguns were entirely not viable for use in any form.

It's a little sad that no matter what your class is the best weapon in the game for you was those toxic pistols, Borderlands was hella fun but it was broken as ****.

Yeah, love the ammo regen mods as much as the life regen ones. My bro and I played as Roland and Mordecai on our first run and finding the team ammo regen mod and the team life regen mod just made everything so much more fun as we could concentrate on the battle rather than finding ammo or health vials.

It also meant that my bro could respec his turret to other stuff rather than just give us ammo.

Really looking forward to the second game esp after seeing the Co-optimus interview with Randy Pitchford on the value of co-op.

I thought the best weapon was the scoped hellfire SMGs? Fire damage was insanely overpowered and nothing came close to scoped SMGs... the combination of the two was just devastating. I know if was the main weapon for my Mordecai for a while.

I'd have to disagree. While I lost my saves and can't provide a screeny, I had a shotgun that did damage x 12 (I can't remember base damage but it was 10x anything else I ever found) and ridiculous amounts of fire damage, even on higher difficulties and second playthrough it would one-two hit kill everything in co-op.

Re: running out of ammo, it's kind of different for everyone, but playing as Roland with an legendary aoe regen mods and my turret, in 4 player co-op we never had ammo issues. We could sit there shooting into the wall for half an hour and not even come close to running out of ammo.

Fair call. i've yet to come across anything with that much firepower behind it.

Yeah, ammo regen mods and shields with life regen are somewhat necessary at later levels IMHO... esp if you want to play to your class' strengths. I must say that using Mordecai with pistol ammo regen and rapid fire pistols can be great fun.
