After Ten Years With the Same Civilization II Game, The Worl

Unread postby News Portal » 13 Jun 12, 10:07 am

Ever wondered what the world will be like in the year 3911 AD? According to the game of Civilization II that redditor Lycerius' has been running for ten years straight, it's a "hellish nightmare of suffering and devastation" where "3 remaining super nations" remain, "after dozens of nuclear wars have rendered vast swaths of the world into uninhabitable wastelands". Click here for the full story, complete with maps of what Civilization II thinks our future world will look like.

Glad this is getting some wider coverage than just a Reddit post. I read it yesterday when it was down around 70 upvotes. I see it has a few more since then.

Love the dedication and the fact he's refusing to give up, despite the apparently hopeless situation. Makes me want to play one of the newer Civ games till the bitter end, rather than just whatever abitrary victory condition is met.

Wow, it's times like these that I kick myself for unsubscribing from /r/gaming. It looks like this has actually spawned it's own subreddit, /r/theeternalwar. There's some great content on there, including a link to the save file if you want to try and break this stalemate yourself.

Thanks GON for the coverage!

Yeah Civ games can turn into an apocalyptic hellhole pretty quickly once the Nukes come into play and you end up with irradiated territory and posturing superpowers left amongst the ruins. 10 years of the same Civ 2 game though? that's dedication and I tip my hat to him for it.

this would have to be a world record time for one single save game or something?

Very cool (CivI and II fan here)but at the same time... so what? You've just come to a seemingly eternal stalemate with in-game mechanics.

I wish Firaxis would make a version of Civ which is basically Civ II but with national borders and culture/religion, and with the graphics of Civ V.

So someone couldn't beat the AI and just let the game run for 10 years (Interesting I suppose) then say that's what the world will be like? I don't get it.

This is incredible and the similarities to 1984 are awesome.
Think I'm gonna have to watch the movie tonight.
