Headphone Suggestions

Unread postby Scarface.au » 9 Jun 12, 11:36 pm

Hi all,

Looking for suggestions for headphones in the $150-$300 bracket for my brother's birthday. I have had a look on headphones.com.au (headphonic) and none really stand out. Had been considering AKG k242HD's, but some concerns around portability (3m cable length!!!!)

For reference, I have a pair of 3 year old AD700's which he's always stealing, so there is an ulterior motive in this :P

I would think he wants something with semi-open design, mild sound, with reasonably punchy bass. Mostly to be used watching movies and listening to music - not a lot of gaming. Does not want something that will require headphone amp.

Also, microphone is not required/wanted on this.

Just after some thoughts as to whether people have used any in this price bracket and their opinions as such.

Cheers

depends if you want to stay with what you know somewhat and upgrade (something like the ATH-AD900's) or try something new with the AKG's.

I hadn't heard of them but they sound great on a few quick google results.

EDIT: I presume you're looking on headphones.com.au? In my experience you can trust them completely when it comes to recommendations.

Would the 900's require an amp? The 700's don't but you might want to check. If not, I'd say ad900s. The 3d wings design is just sooo comfortable.

Yeah, I know a few people with 900's that use them without an amplifier, should be fine.

An amp will make them sound better, like with most headphones.
Use one of those fancy sound cards like in my sig if you can't afford an amp. Just save up until you can :)

I always just thought an amp was a big thing you put in the back of a car, but you can buy them for headphones? I did some quick googling and there are some small ones that look to be about the size of the little iPods, would one be worth having?

some report enormous improvement to iPod sound quality when using an amp but of course you need the headphones to match first

I just bought some Ultrasone HFI-580's, which seem to be fairly decent from the reviews that I've read and although they don't require the amp, for an additional $20 it might be worth the investment..
