fairly long read, but really interesting for anyone who cares about the (possible) deeper meaning behind the movie.

It's not worth paying to see it at the movies.

Best way to describe this movie.
20 years ago some writer who doesn't like sci-fi watched Alien.
Ridley now hires this guy to write Prometheus as a prequel to Alien.
Since he doesn't like sci-fi he is like stuff it, I am not watching Alien again.
Then while taking a ****, scribbles out a quick script on toilet paper.
You get the idea.

I am a Aliens / sci-fi fan and so went to the first session on the day it came out.

As a stand alone sci-fi it's 6/10
As a prequel it's a 5/10

I'm really hating everyone calling a prequel to Alien.. Ridley Scott himself has said it's not a prequel and that it is based in THE SAME UNIVERSE.

I watched Prometheus as a standalone film, and was I massively impressed by Michael Fassbender's performance of David. I've never seen an actor play something that has absolutely no soul whatsoever. Looking forward to the next one!

It's totally worth seeing at the cinema for the visuals (including the 3D treatment), sounds, most of the acting, the Direction.

Just keep in mind:
It wont correlate directly unto Alien. It's a different story arc within the same universe.
The guy who wrote Lost, wrote this. It will leave you guessing at the plot in some respects.
I walked out of the theatre both impressed and entertained, but also disappointed. Disappointed probably because I went in with expectations. But also with the screenplay feeling a bit 'wonky' in the second half.
The following 4 days have had me thinking about this film more than any other I've seen in a long time, maybe since Momento, but in a different way.

I found that interesting , but man after reading that article I felt like such a dumbass. The only thing I was thinking of when watching Prometheus was "ooh pretty SFX and 3D". I guess I tend to view movies as something where I can leave my brain at the door and not have to go all in deep analysis over.

^Yeah I'm a bit that way too - which is good, otherwise I'd be one of those plot hole finding cynical **** who can't enjoy movies anymore

I saw this last night and I still can't work out whether I liked it or not

Best part was the visuals I think - I saw it in 3D. But again I'm not sure whether it was good 3D or bad 3D. If you don't notice it's there is it good?? Cause there were only a handful of scenes that really jolted me back to realising I was wearing the glasses. Hmm, it's probably good, Scott didn't really use it for gimmicks but to add depth to the picture.

Didn't really give a rats about the crew members, I'm not sure I did in Alien or Aliens either (especially Newt lol), but just putting it out there. Wasn't really cheering for anyone here and it makes a difference.

Thought Noomi Rapace did a pretty good job in the lead, couldn't work out her accent sometimes but it didn't bother me. Rafe Spall's American accent did though...Oh yeah and Fassbender was cool, but credit should be to the writers - it was a cool part to play, I think quite a few actors could have pulled that off.

As for suspense? I'm usually Mr Jumpy at the cinema so I was kinda dreading this one. But I was both pleasantly surprised and disappointed. Pleasantly surprised because I didn't have to cower in my chair at any point, or stifle any screams, but disappointed because I'd expected it to be more suspenseful than it was. If you're an adrenaline junkie film goer I think you'd be in the disappointed camp with this. It meanders pretty slowly in the build up as well.

wow, none of the criticisms I'd read anywhere were enough to bother me but THIS is incredibly disappointing. I'm still going to go and will probably still really enjoy it, but no wonder people have been complaining about the script and lack of story. Lost is fcuking terribad RIDLEY WHY WOULD YOU PICK HIM TO WRITE ANYTHING!

even if every aspect of this movie got slammed from every angle I'd still have to go see it for myself.

That is probably the most sensible thing about that movie. It makes a lot more sense than the movie itself. I enjoyed it, but I was really under the impression it was going to be a direct prequel to Alien, and so I came out with more questions than answers. A lot more. Thanks a lot for posting that, I enjoyed reading it!

So I still haven't seen this but would like to know, is this a prequel or not? As there seems to be different opinions on the matter :?

Scott made it quite clear before it came out that it is NOT a prequel, simply a movie set in the same universe at an earlier time.

People ran with the prequel idea but that has all sorts of connotations related to explaining Alien and all the rest which he distinctly wants to avoid. That's why a lot of peoples expectations weren't reached, because they were false to begin with.

It is a prequel in the sense in that there are common elements between Prometheus and Alien, i.e. the Alien ship, the 'Space Jockey' and Weyland Corporation among others. However Prometheus is set on LV-223 whereas Alien/Aliens is set on LV-426 so the events of Prometheus do not directly lead into Alien.
