Jacob Saylor slipped behind the red curtain at this year's E3 to scope out Relic's next RTS installment, [app=8852]Company of Heroes 2[/app]. Is it pushing the envelope, or just more spit-and-polish?

This will probably be my 'need to upgrade my PC' game. Been a MASSIVE fan of Relic games thus far, I'm sure this won't disappoint.

Soviets shooting deserters isn't really super historically accurate. It did happen for a small period of time but wasn't a widespread thing for the vast majority of the war, I hope it isn't a mandatory part of it.

For example:
A report to Commissar General of State Security Lavrentiy Beria on October 10, 1941 noted that since the beginning of the war, NKVD anti-retreat troops had detained a total of 657,364 retreating or deserting personnel, of which 25,878 were arrested, and 10,201 shot. Most of those arrested were later returned to active duty

Just a minor historical quibble though, not a huge issue.

Looks great though! I really enjoyed the first game and am looking forward to how this plays out.

edit: Do you remember anything at all about the stealth gameplay? Did you play the first and is it different?

I was put off CoH by my own RTS-ineptitude. Tried to keep up with the TEA boys when they played the AI on hard but I just got slaughtered. Same with the Men of War series.

Hell, Dawn of War II challenged the **** out of me and I really persevered because the quasi-RPG elements were so much fun.

Will watch this one on youtube and wait for Steam's 2014 Christmas Sale.

I haven't played CoH in ages but is it just me or do those screenshots not look *that* much more advanced than the original?

With the no retreat thing does that mean you can't retreat your units like you could for the original game?
*Insert negative stuff here.*

they're not too ridiculous, but I'm fine with that. Definitely crisper and more detailed but its not a massive leap forward, but the original was pretty damn gorgeous as it was anyway. Still a bigger improvement than cod4 to mw3...

not sure how the retreat mechanic will work, seems a little pointless tbh. I did love the special axis ability in the first one where you could force infantry to retreat

Agreed. My point was more that why would a computer struggle if the game doesn't look *that* much better than the original?

I'm sure you can master CoH2... if it comes with GFWL achievements :dodgy:

Why don't you get your TEA friends to set one of the AI to normal? That's what I do when introducing a friend to CoH.

Don't forget that code / graphical optimisation is among the final phases of development. I wouldn't be super concerned about performance of their preview code just yet.

Having said that, the original game was pretty hard on my rig at the time.
