Plus it runs Linux, and it's one of the few niches that Linux actually excels in.

I've been fooling around with Linux since 1998. I use it at work on servers, it runs on single-board computers alongside FPGAs, these are areas where it works the best. But time and time again I've been disappointed with how much hype the zealots have proclaimed Linux as the second-coming and yet the reality is that it's just not as good for desktop use as something like Windows 7. Plus the community (particularly the younger side of the community who are still idealistic) is TOXIC and don't believe anything is wrong with Linux; even if presented with valid problems they'll just dismiss it as tripe. /rant

Honestly if steamplay went to linux and I could use photoshop I would have absolutely zero need for windows and I'd be a much happier man.

Well that's the other bit of course - the software I want doesn't exist on Linux (WINE doesn't count). I do recall Gabe saying in an interview that they would like to support Linux but basically, given the very small user base and lack of games (as Steam on Linux would be nothing without the games to go with it), the time and effort which would go into making a Linux build of Steam has to be put on the back-burner in favor of higher priority pursuits. For now at least. Limited amount of manpower and all that. If anyone really wants the quote I can go hunt it down.

Anyways, this is a distraction from the important stuff - I like pie.

Have you been reading the blog posts?

- orders will be filled based on when you put your name down (ie: the first person to put their name down weeks ago will get the first offer to buy one.) AFAIK there is no way of knowing where you are in the list, you just have to wait for an email telling you how to order.

- the first batch of Pi's have been received from China, however they need to be cleared under certain regulations so that they can actually be sold (more info and pics here: http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/945)

- pretty sure both suppliers (element14 and RS) are limiting it to 1 per customer until demand dies down. I've got my name on the list at both element14 and RS so should eventually end up with 2 to begin with.

I'm giving up on the pi, going to build an Intel G530 based system instead.

Very true, but at just under $40 a pop, it is not exactly expensive I registered interest at both Farnell (element14) and RS...Not sure what I will do with one of them let alone 2

I've got 1 planned to be a portable media centre. Instead of carrying around a big laptop and bag, just leave this in the car and pop a movie on a USB stick. (damn LG TV's that don't have Dolby rights... otherwise I could play straight off a USB).

Other 1 can be a backup

It's a fantastic little toy and I can see people doing some interesting things with it (it's an evolutionary leap from the Arduino playground) but it's not remotely comparable to mainstream SFF PCs.

SO im about to buy one of these and im wondering how the people who bought them feel about them a few months down the track. Web browsing, video playback, linux steam, xbmc, anything that you've been using it for really.

Haven't really played with mine much yet. Installed XBMC. It plays HD content OK but the audio lags sometimes. Doesn't appear to have a useful web browser (wow text only) yet though some of the other distros might.

Little bit disappointed at this stage. My phone is not any more powerful hardware wise yet can do more (admittedly it cost a few hundred technically).
