I did not know about the Blizzard authenticator, will check this out.

If it were a keylogger would they not be targeting my bank accounts as I do a fair amount of online banking.

It honestly surprises me that only my DH was targeted as I have a level 32 WD which is untouched.

Could it also be a possibility that the character information for my DH got screwy in Blizzard's database? What is also strange, is that for my DH the active quest is the fallen star or first one for Tristram where in actual fact I was up to the black soul stone in Act 2.

I am a programmer so i know full well that data corruption can occur OR if someone on Blizzard's end was doing a stealth update and screwed something up in their SQL query.

The reason the active quest is the fallen star is it was changed with the 'change quest' button so your stuff could be transferred to a level 1 character in a co-op game.

Maybe.. it's a conspiracy, gold sellers in WoW and D3 are actually employed by Blizzard as an extra source of income.. >.>

I did notice an odd name appear in my social list of players how does one go about blocking them?

Dont open the game to the public. As for the toon itself, right click on its name in the social list, and go from there.

This is actually the dead giveaway that it was gold sellers.
Its a two man operation, one guy is on a low character (the one now undoubtedly in your recent played friends) the other guy gets on your account. He then sets you to the first quest, as the low character they need to trade to is on the first quest. They sell all your gear, drop all your money, give it to the lowbie, goodbye.

Right.

I never open my games to the public so this is a mystery to me.

Unfortunately Blizzard take their sweet **** time doing a rollback!

I don't even know why the gold sellers/hackers bother. D3 has already had so much hyperflation in the 3 weeks its been going that the gold sellers are advertising millions of gold for relatively tiny amounts of money. There can't be a lot of profit in it.

Relatively tiny amounts of money for us yes.. But where do the gold sellers live? ;P

I remember one report from ages ago about a Chinese prison warden that was using inmates to farm WoW gold.

FYI: The SMS notifications won't stop your account from getting hacked, they let you know about changes.

Email accounts aren't terribly hard to get into if you can look up some basic information on Facebook to answer the security questions. Once in you have access to pretty much every website that person has ever signed up for. I'd suggest this is a far easier way to get into someone BNet account.

Very true Auld.
That is one reason I HATE pre-defined security questions.

Anyone with half a brain can find out what my mothers maiden name, address, favourite band, dogs name, etc etc is.

Very true again.
You can basically feed yourself for $1AU/US a day in Thailand for example.

my security questions are ALWAYS bogus for this very reason. I mean mothers maiden name? hometown? How the hell do they expect that to be secure, honestly?

I'm with you on that one, all of mine are fake answers.

Likewise.

But the problem is remembering your bogus answers.
Many think of 'password reset' questions, as something they don't have to remember, because the question reflects the answer. These are the same people that get hacked.
