Probably should've said that I won't touch ASUS with a wooden stick, let alone any object. I hate their warranty service and they have the worst parts prices of any brand..

I'm looking at getting that overkill Metabox P270WM with SLI GTX675's which puts me just over $3000 which I'm not fussed about.. I've heard the Clevo-based ones are pretty impressive and considering how upgradeable they are I can't complain.

I would seriously recommend NOT getting a laptop for gaming. They size your starting to look at is just not portable. Its no longer really a laptop, and it'll get HOT.. really hot.

If you've got 3k, buy a sweet gaming desktop for 2k (easy peasy.) then spend 800-900 on a decent laptop (I got an 13inch Asus for $900 that I use on the train on the way to work.) for whatever you needed the laptop for.

I have no need for a desktop >_> I already have one.

Your argument is invalid, so when I want a gaming laptop I don't care about size or heat I just want a gaming laptop =)

I'm struggling with the logic here. Why not just upgrade your desktop then? Is there a purpose to specifically paying the hardware markups for a laptop? You go to LAN's every weekend and don't like lifting a tower?

^ Yes and because I require a 'mobile workstation' so I can run my VM's for work and for some programming.

I need a $3000 laptop to be a companion to my $3500 desktop, plus tax time is so close.

Recommend me anything that will play BF3 like a dream plus run a couple of VM's for work.

damn it... lol, someone needs to teach me the ways of what can and can't be claimed on tax, I am seriously missing out

Do you work in IT? If you do then what you do is get everything itemised, for instance you buy a desktop and each component has a price that leads to your total, on the invoice/reciept you get each component as a single item. This way you can claim the full thing instead of getting it depreciated as a whole.

Hence why I'm getting a custom laptop and not some crappy ASUS, Acer, etc.

I'm a games programmer, I use this as my 'mobile workstation'.
U36J
Picked it up for $900 from a laptop dealer near highpoint in Melbourne. Spent the rest of my tax money on programming reference manuals and games. ('Cos games are related to work.. teehee.)

Its super light, super portable (I use it on a train.), has two graphics cards in it (integrated and dedicated) and switches between the two depending on if you need it, which makes the battery life amazing compared to other laptops I've owned. Never had an issue with it.

^ As I mentioned I hate ASUS and when I want to spend around $3000, I want to spend that amount. This has to play games as well so to spend only $900 is laughable.

I vaguely remember that as well, however I guess he changed his mind.

Have you decided on what you will be going with yet Ash_Williams? Still can't speak highly enough of the XPS range (especially for a base level gaming laptop), although if you have the cash to spare than the Alienware range will no doubt be a way better option.

I'm waiting for one of these to come in stock:

Probably go with that purely because it's overkill and what I want.

He's getting rid of his air to grab a $3k gaming laptop...

why specifically are you planning to grab one if you dont mind me asking? dont you already have a sli'd 580 workstation coupled with a mac pro server? why would you want to grab a gaming laptop for BF3? just seems, overkill...

i'd go a high end Asus, or an XPS/Alienware, and make sure its got a 6xx series gpu with an ssd, shouldnt need much more than a quadcore.

if your going a meta, check out originpc also

Overkill is my unofficial middle name. I've decided to keep the Air as a more portable longer battery life solution, but to also get this amazingly overkill 'desktop replacement' because I can. The P270WM has an approximate battery life of around 30-50 minutes and I'm lead to believe it comes with two power packs that can combine into one.

Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Frak yes.

All up it will work out around $3100 shipped.. which I'm happy with =D
